Cipla organises lecture on Hypertension

JAMMU, May 17: On the occasion of World Hypertension Day, Pharmaceutical major-Cipla organized a media interaction with noted Cardiologist Dr Dharminder Kumar about emerging concerns of "Hypertension" for the benefit of the people of the state.
While appreciating the ongoing efforts of Cipla Limited-a pioneer in leader in hypertension management and its "Check BP" aims for screening, educating, and distribution of starter kits to make the life of the patients better, Dr Dharminder threw light on various aspects of disease and remedial measures.
Dr Dharminder said that the World Health Organisation (WHO) attributes hypertension as leading cause of cardiovascular mortality/death, which is about 57 percent of all stroke death and 24 percent of CHD deaths. He further said that Obesity and changing lifestyle is common reason of hypertension among all age groups in both developed and developing countries and is emerging as a global epidemic now. Explaining his point thoroughly, he said that overweight leads to high blood pressure, which in turn causes fatal condition like strokes. The number of Indians having symptoms of hypertension is also increasing rapidly. He also said that physical exercises, work, avoiding junk food, alcohol consumption, smoking, and reduction in viewing TV and Computers can reduce the risks of hypertension. Doctor was of the view that one should regularly monitor one's weight, blood pressure, and Body Mass Index (BMI). The normal BMI is 18.5 to 24.9, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 to 39.9 is obese and more than 40 is dangerously obese. He further said that as per JNC guidelines, the normal BP is Systolic BP of less than 120 and Diastolic BP of less than 80, and if these measurements upto 140/90 is Pre-hypertension, and more than140/90 is Hypertension.
Dr Dharminder Kumar finally stated that if someone is diagnosed as having "Hypertension", there is no need to become panic, today we have many effective drugs, which combines with healthy life style can help us to keep blood pressure under control and also prevent further complication.He also said that regular check ups and consultations with doctors are very necessary.
