2 J&K climbers in IMF's 20-member team for Shivling Peak | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 17: Everester, Ram Singh Slathia among two state climbers, who are members of the Mountaineering Association of J&K, have been named in the 20-member team of the country for mountaineering expedition to Shivling Peak. The team has been selected by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, the apex body for adventure sports in the country, for the prestigious expedition scheduled to be organised from May 22. Other climber selected from J&K is Stanzin Youthak. Situated six kilometers South of Gaumukh, the famous pilgrimage destination, Shivling situated at an altitude of 6543 meters is the most stunning peak of the Garhwal region. "Also called Matterhorn of India because of its steep rock faces, the peak is well guarded from all sides by rocky terrain except on the West side where the slope is moderate enough for the accumulation of snow," informed general secretary of the Mountaineering Association of J&K, Dr C K Khajuria. Though the peak was first climbed about 36 years ago in 1974, it has not been climbed by any J&K climber so far. Both these J&K climbers, Sub Inspector, Ram Singh and constable Stanzin Youthak of Jammu and Kashmir Police are experienced mountaineers, who have scaled many formidable peaks earlier. "While Ram Singh has scaled many challenging peaks including Mount Everest, the highest peak of the world, Ms Youthak has scaled Koteshwar (6081m) and was a member of Pre Everest NCC expedition in 2004. She has also been to a height of 5300 m on Shivling peak during an earlier expedition," former general secretary of the Association, Ram Khajuria.
