Class work cripples in JU, students stage peaceful march | JCUM extends support to students agitation, demands local VCs for all universities in Jammu province | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 18: Normal class work in all departments of Jammu University today got paralyzed as the students and scholars collectively boycotted their classes and resorted to massive sloganeering in protest against setting up of police post on the campus. Agitated over university authorities' remarks wherein they had alleged that a "handful of miscreants" assaulted the guards deployed in the varsity yesterday, the students and scholars-irrespective of their organizational affiliations-presented a show of strength and assembled near Central Library. Raising slogans against the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Vice Chancellor, hundreds of students and scholars comprising girls accused the authorities of following "dictatorial policies." They further alleged that the students are repeatedly being harassed by the police cops on the instructions of the varsity authorities. After a brief protest, the agitating students under the banner of Student Scholars Committee against Police Station (SSCAP) took out a peace rally and marched towards Administrative Block where they staged a 'sit-in' (dharna) for two hours. Carrying placards and musical instruments like dappler or tambourine, they raised slogans like "JKP Go Back Go Back", "We Want Justice," Vice Chancellor Hosh Main Aayo………" etcand warned that if the decision of establishing police post on the campus is not rolled back, the students would be forced to intensify their agitation and the onus of it would lies on the authorities. The student leaders comprising Vikas Sharma, Varinder Singh Chib, Mohinder Pal Singh Pandu, Rahul Dev and Rozi criticized the Vice Chancellor for maintaining an "adamant posture" towards the demands of the student community. "The students and scholars have been protesting against the police post for the past many days but no one takes them seriously. We also strongly condemn the brutal cane charge on the students who were protesting against the police post. The protest was the democratic right of the students and brutal cane charge on students was a reflection of dictatorial rule prevailing in the varsity," the leaders alleged. They also appealed the Governor N N Vohra, who is also the Chancellor of Jammu University, to personally look into the matter and direct the authorities concerned for immediate removal of police post from the campus. However, the students have declared that they would continue their peaceful protest and it would be intensified in days to come. It was sixth consecutive day today when students boycotted their classes and protest against the police post establishment. At least seven students had received injuries when they had a mild scuffle with the police cops. The students had turned violent yesterday and had smashed the window panes and damaged the doors of administrative block demanding removal of police post from the campus. Meanwhile, Jammu Central University Morcha (JCUM) has extended its support the students of Jammu University for their struggle against the deployment and establishment of police post on the campus. The Morcha has also condemned the use of force and cane charge on students and demanded immediate resignation of Vice-Chancellor JU, Varun Sahni. In an emergent meeting, the JCUM observed that "obstinate and capricious" attitude of this Vice-Chancellor has ruined and degraded this otherwise developing and progressive University. It pointed out that that its demand of having local Vice Chancellor is justified and further vindicated by the conduct and attitude of the VC of Jammu University.
