Rice Growers urge govt to promote Basmati | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 18: Asserting deplorable condition of rice growers of Jammu, RS Pura Rice Growers Association today appealed the state government to give due attention in promoting and increasing production of Basmati in Jammu. Talking to media persons here today, Dev Raj, president of the association said, "Farmers faced the heat of lack of planning and coordination between ground level workers and higher authorities in the department". "Our farmers are unaware towards rice growing infact no training under agro-activities, improving infrastructure, use of new and modern techniques have been provided to the farmers despite liberal funding from Government of India under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana", he said. He said, "Government is very much sincere to promote the agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah gave due attention but still there is need of proper planning at departmental level as poor planning on the part of concerning departments resulted into lapse of funds". "Sowing Season is on our head but there is no availability of quality seeds and fertilizers, farmers have been forced to get good yield seeds from outside states", Dev Raj said, demanding constitution of Basmati Export Development Foundation for proper planning and coordinate efforts to promote rice production. The members informed that in states like Punjab and Gujarat, the Agriculture scientists during peak sowing season worked on ground level along with farmers to have quality and yieldable seed but in Jammu no one ready to work on ground whether its SKUAST scientists or concerning departments like irrigation and agriculture. They appealed the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene personally and invite private players in this trade so that growers have a better benefit through public private partnership and take some appropriate action regarding farmers of Jammu region. On the occasion, the association informed that International Basmati Conference is going to be held on May 20 at Chattha for trapping export potential of Basmati from Jammu.
