Commoner indifferent to A I team
5/18/2010 11:51:09 PM

Early Times report
Jammu, May 18: Amnesty International's (AI) Kashmir visit has not, contrary to expectations, generated much interest. While the politicians are eager to meet the team, the commoner is totally indifferent. The fourth estate is the only section of the society that is following the team with interest because of their professional compulsions.
The United Jehad Council (UJC), an amalgam of various militant organization operating from Pakistan administered Kashmir today welcomed the visit with caution. "It is a healthy development but the tem comprises of two Indians. This casts a shadow of doubt on the impartiality of he team", a spokesman of the amalgam said in a statement mailed to a local news agency this evening.
Similar apprehensions have been expressed by members of the Kashmir civil society. Preferring anonymity, a university teacher said the visit would not make any difference. "The Amnesty International is only an NGO. We should not expect miracles. It cannot do anything", he said.
According to newspaper reports more than twenty thousand appeals have been made by various quarters during the past two decades seeking intervention of Amnesty International in Kashmir. However, the way Kashmir has been treated by the organization especially during the past five years has eroded its credibility. Sensing the local mood, the visiting team assured a fair and impartial investigation.
A close friend of detained Muslim League leader, Masrat Alam gave a sarcastic smile when asked to comment on the Amnesty visit. "The high court quashed yet another detention under PSA and ordered immediate release of Masrat Alam. However, the police booked him in another case and most probably will have to serve another term under PSA. The police have dared to book Masrat while the Amnesty team is here. The police have conveyed in clear terms that presence of Amnesty international makes no difference", he said.
Khurshid Ahmad Dar of Sopore expects a miracle. His son disappeared mysteriously five years ago. "I will try to meet the team to narrate my woeful tale. Amnesty International is a prestigious organization and can help me in tracing out my son's whereabouts", he hoped.
The politicians seem desperate to meet the team. Representing lesser known organizations, the politicians have been requesting the media persons for an appointment with the team.
Pertinent to mention the government of India has allowed AI's Kashmir visit after two decades.
