Road to famous Mansar lake dotted with "pitfalls" all over | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 18: The 25-km tarmac road linking Samba to the famous tourist spot of Mansar lake is dotted with pits which make the journey pathetic and exhausting. The drive is not smooth. Half an hour journey takes an hour and a half as pits and "pitfalls", which have come up on almost every part of the road, act as unapparent sources of trouble or danger. Another road, that connects city's peripheral Sidhra area with Mansar, is also in a bad shape ahead of Sruinsar lake, which falls on the way. So, both the roads act as a spoiler for the tourist spot. Some pits are so deep that it looks very risky while negotiating them. The ethusiasm of tourists, or school children going on excursion to lake is almost lost while covering this road stretch.A smooth road would definitely attract more tourists to the lake. Most of the locals come here for religious purposes. They offer prayers at the old Sheshnag temple and feed fishes in the lake. Fishing in the lake is strictly banned and even thinking of it is considered a sin. Deputy commissioner (DC), Samba, Saurabh Bhagat said the "road falls under the state sector and money for its construction comes from the central road fund". He said Rs 40-50 cr were likely to be spent on the construction of the road. A project report in this regard was already submitted to the Centre, he informed. Bhagat said pre-mixing on 9-km stretch was done some time back.Asked if the central funds would reach this tourist season, he said he hoped so. The tourism department has, however, done nothing on its level to expedite either the construction work on the road or its repairing. When the attention of a tourism department official was drawn towards poor facilities at Mansar, he said efforts were being made to beautify the lake area by developing attractive landscapes around it. He said there was also a proposal to encourage businessmen to make good hotels and restaurants at Mansar. Good food and lodging facilities were likely to give a boost to tourism in the area, he added.
