Dwindling national character
5/21/2010 12:33:30 AM

Khushwant. S. Ranial
The growth, development, peace, progress of any individual, group, association, institution, state or society, rests on varying factors like strength, stamina, influence, vision, intelligence, creative outlook, aspirations, planning, strong will dedication, devotion and above all the personal character. Long ago, renowned English philosopher, William Shakespere had once quoted that “some people are borne great, some achieve greatness and upon some, it is thurst upon. Likewise, personal character of an individual elevates one’s own status in rating scale through display of one’s shown forsightedness and in some cases by the sheer dint of strong efforts after shedding personal interests, whims, caprices, and above all self ego. But to acquire so, a lot of sacrifices needs to be given. And generally, it is observed that we Indian have mostly been inculcated the habit of aspiring and acquiring illegally than sacrificing with the result that we generally fall short of the demand of those brethren living in Europe who have not adopted the culture of self before the service. To them-their nation, state, society and civilization is supreme than their own individual progress and upliftment. They stake their choice at the cost of the betterment of their nation. To support my feelings, I have outnumbered examples but I should cite a couple of them. Recently, my father came across one his old friends and asked about his other family members. The respondent told that his eldest son who had been in Canada for last ten years has recently been departed by his master over there, with whom, he remained almost engaged for nearly the same parallel period. The cause of deportation was on very simple grounds in terms to Indians thoughts. The father was told by his friend that his son only suggested his master to adulterate the milk by adding water to earn more profit. The farm defaulter was serving in a dairy farm for last couple of years. The master/ owner was so shall shocked to hear this ill advise that he without any delay led to his deportation.
The owner held his servant guilty of preaching a wrong method to earn more. The owner told servant that by adhering your plans I shall not only be accountable to God but equally to the whole society and my nation. It is before that bulk of strength gets polluted through the adulterated means shared by you, the master told that it is better to expel you out so that a single polluted mind may not able to perpetuate the pollution. In an another instance, my younger nephew who had been to Tokyo to attend a conference related to his medical profession shared with me number of characters and incidents. During our conversation, he told me that while on his way back to Airport, due to certain unavoidable reasons lost, he got late and in order to cover up the lost time to take the connecting fight, he stressed upon cabbie to accelerate the car but he didn’t do so and rather remained adhered to the speed limits shown earmarked on roadside sign boards. To add further that since it was deep mid night having very poor traffic on road, he halted his vehicle on a very clear and clean stretch of the highway, on observing the red signals. Despite making favourable pleas to sped away the vehicle, the cabbie did not change his own attitude and rather least bothering about any undue offered favour, he directed him to get down. In an another incident, one of my fast friend who has been putting up in It lay for more than a decade, on his recent visit, a couple of days ago, narrated about the work culture over there. He told me that there is no large difference between Master and Mate as work is worship to then. They all redeem their pledge to work sincerely, honestly without any expected favour of an undue nature. Neither they indulge in gossips during working hours nor do they interfere in the others working style. Red Tapism is least followed. But all the above stated things are barely observed in ours nation. In our nation, particularly government run institutions, we take in pride to waste time, spend office hours for living in comfortable zones and hold firm faith in escapism and putting of things on other days rather than solving and setting the issue today. Under such circumstances, how much progress one can hope to gain so is really very unpredictable. Ours commitment towards our society, nation and running civilization is dying. It would not be appropriate to paint every living human soul with the same brush but the bulk strength holds myopic approach depicting our national character is dwindling day by day. We are more harping for the rights and least banking to bear the burden of discharging our duties painfully. This missing link needs to be ignited. There is an utter need to focus our attention towards collective welfare of the society. In the absence of such an integrated approach, there is every likelihood of collapse sooner or later. National character cannot be build over –a –day or week or a fortnight. For this, year efforts in a very sustained way require formidable support from all zones and quarters. But before any such things, happens what is urgently required is to make our education based on moral values effective so that educand imbibes it and put into practice to achieve what they yearn earnestly. Yoked India retained her lost glory through the efforts of great leaders and supreme sacrifices of M Gandhiji, JL Nehru, Sardar Patel, Rani Ki Jhansi, Sardar Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, S Udhaam Singh, Subash Chander Bose, Dr Rajinder Prasadh, Dr V Radhakrishanan, Sh LB Shastri in past and Dr Manmohan Singh and Sh. Abdul Kalam (ex-president) who have held their nerves, and remain footed to ground so far in contributing to the welfare of masses. These personalities were and are enriched with true nationalism and nationalistic character. The nation seeks such bench strength again to pull the wheel drenched in mud. Today we are so deeply soaked in corrupt system that one wonders to tread smoothly and get one’s work done free of cost or delayed tactics. Honest measures needs to be restored otherwise days are not far off when we shall loose the smelling sense of honesty and purity making life too miserable to live in our so called great India.
