Tension after youth dies in Bakshi Ngr PS lock up
5/21/2010 12:39:34 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 20: Over a decade and a half after sub-inspector (SI) Sandeep Pal Singh had died of a mysterious bullet shot inside the Bakshi Nagar police station, an alleged drug supplier today died under mysterious circumstances in the police station lock up.
Paramjit Singh alias Bhulla, son of Dheeraj Singh, was alleged to be a supplier of the banned proxyvon capsules.
He was today picked up from his residence at Bakshi Nagar by the district special branch cops and taken to the Bakshi Nagar police station.
Police sources said he was found lying dead under mysterious circumstances inside the police station lock up in the evening.
At about 6.10 pm, Paramjit's body was shifted in a police patrol Gypsy to the GMC Hospital mortuary.
Tension, however, gripped Bakshi Nagar after people came to know about Paramjit's death in lock up. They gathered inside the hospital premises and held a strong anti-police demonstration. Senior police officers had a tough time in pacifying them.
Paramjit's family members and locals have decided to place the body in the middle of the Bakshi Nagar road Friday and hold an anti-police demonstration in support of their demand for a probe into the alleged custodial death.
His family members alleged that he died of police torture. His wife Gurcharan Kour alleged that he was having lunch at home when cops -- Raj Mohammad and Rajinder Singh -- barged into their room and arrested him.
On the demand of the people, a medical board was constituted to conduct post-mortem on the body Friday morning.
It may be mentioned that SI Sandeep was locked in Bakshi Nagar police station over a decade and a half back for his alleged involvement in a petrol-mixing scam. He had died of a mysterious bullet shot inside the lock up.
A CBI probe was later ordered into the incident following protests by various Sikh organisations.
