EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 20: Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, Prof Varun Sahni, who is already known for inaccessibility and aristocratic behaviour, is, it seems, willfully vitiating the atmosphere on the campus by displaying an extreme form of obstinacy. Instead of discussing matters with the agitating student community, which has been opposing the establishment of police post on the University campus since the past eight days, the arrogant and adamant Vice-Chancellor has been making misleading statements, thus provoking further the already rather angry student community. Sources have informed this correspondent that the Vice-Chancellor and his coterie, who are afraid of facing students because of gross mismanagement of university affairs, are determined to suppress the voice of the student community so that they could rule and operate in the manner they wish.
The Vice-Chancellor has been making statements believing that the people do not understand the meaning and implications of what he has been saying. He has been taking everyone for a ride on the premise that he can befool anyone for all the times. He has turned so arrogant and unreasonable that he has started saying two things on the same issue at the same time. He has been saying that he has not established any police post on the campus and in the breath he is saying policemen would stay on the campus to maintain law and order. What he has been saying is a contradiction of sorts. Students of the Jammu University are intelligent enough to understand this contradiction and expose the double-speak of the Vice-Chancellor.
The indifferent attitude of the Vice-Chancellor to the demand of the student community has created an alarming situation on the campus. His unaccommodating attitude has not only resulted in the complete boycott of classes, but has also led to a situation forcing the student community to gherao him. The Wednesday incident that forced the Vice-Chancellor to run for cover indicates the extent to which situation has deteriorated on the campus. He himself is responsible for the kind of
treatment he was meted out by the angry and desperate student community.
The Vice-Chancellor is head of the institution, which is the highest house of learning in Jammu province. He must devise a policy that not only ensures maintenance of law and order on the campus, but also takes on board the student community. No one would question any step of the authorities aimed at maintaining peace on the campus. But one can certainly question the move of the university authorities to hand over the campus to the police whose style of work always irritates every law-abiding citizen. It would be better if the Vice-Chancellor takes into confidence the student community and adopt an approach that suits the authorities as well as students. The sooner he does so the better. Adamancy would only add to his difficulties, as also to the difficulties of students and the ultimate result of the impasse would be the collapse of the whole academic system. Students are always innocent. They simply want the authorities to listen to them patiently.
