Rajiv Gandhi remembered on his death anniversary | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 21: Former Prime Minister, late Rajiv Gandhi was profoundly remembered on his 19th anniversary as several district units of Congress party and other political leaders organised function to pay rich tributes to departed soul. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah paid glowing tributes to late Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. In a message, the Chief Minister described late Rajiv Gandhi as a visionary leader who pioneered Information Technology revolution and strengthened Panchayati Raj System to decentralize power at grass roots level so that the common masses are involved in policy formulation and implementation. Rich tributes were paid to former Prime Minister on his death anniversary in a function at PCC headquarters Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu. Saifuddin Soz MP (former Union Minister) and president J&K Pradesh Congress Committee presided over the function, while several senior leaders, functionaries of PCC, DCC and frontal organization attended the function. Speaking on the occasion, Soz said that Rajiv Gandhi was a dynamic leader who served the nation and the countrymen with full dedication and devotion. Soz said that Rajiv Gandhi made Jawaharlal Nehru and his mother Indira Gandhi as his role model and followed their foot step as Prime Minister. On this occasion, Anam Choudhary, a prominent Gujjar leader of Rajouri-Poonch and son of veteran leader and former MLC Choudhary Gulzar, joined congress party. He was admitted into the party. Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand also paid glowing tributes to late Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. Addressing a gathering of Gandhi Workers Forum led by Showkat Ashai here today, Tara Chand described late Rajiv Gandhi as the architect of modren India who pioneered Information Technology revolution and strengthened Panchayati Raj System to decentralize power at grass roots level. The Deputy Chief Minister said it was the dream of late Rajiv Gandhi to see Jammu and Kashmir prosper on the path of progress and development. He said the best way to pay homage to the late leader is to make efforts to make the State and the country ever strong and powerful. Similarly, District Congress Committee Ramban also paid floral tributes to departed leader by organizing rally at Batote today. "Rajiv Gandhi was great leader of vision and revolutionary ideas and successfully prepared the whole nation especially younger generation for the challenges of 21st century," said, Gurmukh Singh, former Minister, vice president, PCC and chairman125th Year Congress Foundation Celebration Committee. He further said that late Rajiv Gandhi took revolutionary steps reducing voting age from 21 year to 18 year in order to involve youths in nation building to make India strong, prosperous and capable enough to safeguard the democratic, socialistic and secular fabric of the Indian society. While paying tributes to late Rajiv Gandhi, president District Congress Committee Bharat Gandhi, ex-MLA highlighted, in detail, the steps taken by the great leader to provide social justice and security to all the sections especially backward, down-trodden, minority and neglected sections of Indian society. He also threw light on the programmes and policies formulated and initiated during Rajiv Gandhi's time. The rally was a part of series of Congress functions being organized by the 125th Year Congress Foundation Celebration Committee in all the districts of Jammu province in which large number of prominent congressmen and functionaries from all over the Ramban district participated. Meanwhile, District Congress Committee Congress paid 'heartfelt' homage to Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. The DCC marked the day by organizing a colourful function at Manek Palace, Udhampur with an impressive 500-odd gathering of prominent citizens of the historic township present on the occasion. The function was presided over by Bhupinder Singh Pathania, president DCC Udhampur and Brij Mohan Sharma, contested candidate from Udhampur whereas Jugal Kishore Sharma, former minister was the chief guest on the occasion. The meeting started with observance of a two minutes silence praying for peace and solace to the departed soul. Giving a clarion call to the party workers and the general masses, Jugal Kishore remembered that tirade against corruption and IT awareness were two main hallmarks of Rajivji's contribution to the Indian society. He called upon the people to emulate the charismatic leader and his characteristic life-style. B.S. Pathania, DCC president called for treading upon the path shown by the giant who was not only an outstanding leader but a visionary, karamyogi and a globalist par excellence. Minister for Roads and Buildings, G. M. Saroori has paid glowing tributes to former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary at a public meeting held at Srinagar today. Saroori said that Rajiv Gandhi was the Icon of young India who dreamt of a strong, self-reliant and technologically advanced India. He said departed leader's role in strengthening in Panchayati Raj system in the country to centralize powers at the grass root level would be remembered for long. Saroori said that India wants friendly relations with its neighbouring countries including Pakistan adding that better relations between the two neighbouring countries were in the better interests of the people.
