Weather plays pranks in Kashmir, plains | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 21: Weather has played pranks with people in the entire north India. While people are seen shivering in the cold that has gripped the entire Kashmir valley, those in the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Rajasthan continue to be tormented by the warmest days where the temperature has touched the mercury level of 44 and 47 degrees Celsius. The incessant rain in the Kashmir valley during the last several days not only flooded several areas in the valley but forced people to switch on room heaters and spend nights under the blankets and quilts. In several are as of Himachal Pradesh, especially the Manali area, there has been no respite from rains and hail storms. On a number of occasions phone, television and power supply were snapped in several areas of Himachal because of lightning, thunder and heavy rain. The recent flash floods affected paddy transplantation. Minister for Agriculture, G. H Mir, said that he had directed all the experts in the department to move to the villages and help farmers in adopting better farming practices so that they could carry out proper sowing of paddy plants. Mir said that in case the weather conditions improved there would be no loss in the far m sector because paddy transplantation would be started after a week or 10 days. He said, in reply to a question, that there was no shortage of fertilisers and pesticides. Senior functionaries in the Horticulture Department said that the recent heavy rain is likely to affect the yield from the orchards because in some areas the blossoms on the fruit trees had been hit by the heavy rain.
