Telecom companies violating Centre's guidelines | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 21: The purpose for which the Union Government had imposed a blanket ban on the "Pre-paid" mobile phones in our state is once again proving ineffective as the Telecom companies operating in the state are selling multiple SIM cards to single person. The ban was imposed on November 1, 2009 citing security reasons behind this step. The government had stated that there were numerous incidents of militants using pre-paid connections, under false names, for communication and plotting as was reported by the security forces operating in the state. Presently, the Telecom companies in the state are issuing SIMs without properly verifying the credentials of the subscribers. They have announced lucrative incentives for retailers and dealers such as Air Conditioners, LCD's, and Refrigerators etc. for selling maximum SIMs. To achieve the given targets, the dealers are selling more than one SIM's, that too free of cost to people raising apprehensions of their misuse by the unscrupulous elements of the society. Naveen, a youth having 5 SIMs of one company stated "If companies are providing SIMs free of cost having free talk time of Rs 50, so I am benefited by Rs 250 that too without much efforts". There are also reports that retailers are issuing SIMs in the names of genuine subscribers to other persons not having proper documents. There are also reports that even some subscribers are unaware that how many SIMs are operating in his name. Police sources however said, "We have now develop a proper mechanism to monitor all kind unscrupulous activities in the state involving mobile phones, and a strict action will be taken on the retailers involved in such kind of activities".
