Children suffer as NSUI show ran beyond stipulated time | On Rajiv Gandhi's martyrdom Day, Cong leaders hold kids to 'ransom' | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 21: Children are always soft targets when it comes to victimizing them while getting through political agendas by the politicians. But it could not have happened on the martyrdom day of a noble politician like late Rajiv Gandhi, when veteran Congress leaders of the state virtually held small kids to ransom by occupying the stage at Abhinav Theatre for long hours today. On the occasion of 19thdeath anniversary of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi these Congressmen including Union Minister of State Sachin Pilot, PCC Chief Saif Ud Din Soz and others made small children to fret and fume in the scorching heat outside the hall while they themselves remained seated inside and even did not mind giving long speeches, something which delayed the performance of kids by over three hours. The occasion was a seminar organized by NSUI wing of Jammu on the subject 'eliminating terrorism by youth' but ironically the organizers made children a terrified lot when they were not even allowed to enter the auditorium while the 'political show' was on. Attired in lovely, colourful costumes the tiny tots were initially enthusiastic but as the hours went by , the scorching heat coupled with humid and suffocating atmosphere in the lobby and corridors of Theatre, their wait became unbearable to the extent that many of them started crying and pestering their parents. In fact a big chunk of the audience inside the hall comprised of the parents of these children drawn from as many as 10 schools by a group for fancy dress competition. They waited in vain as the leaders stuck to their seats beyond stipulated time, perhaps having no idea about the plight nor did the NSUI guys care for the small children .The children in their costumes were seen running from one end to other under burning sun, many of them looking very often for drinking water around the premises. The Congress leaders had all apparently gathered to pay tributes to the late Prime Minister. But instead of sticking to the theme of the subject, most of them bragged and boasted about personal achievements , though Union Minister Sachin Pilot and JU Vice Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni could alone connect it with the relevance of the Day and topic. This is something very normal in the political functions but what made things worse was the fact while NSUI, which is believed to chosen the venue for the function in last hour this morning failed to wind up the function vacate the hall within the stipulated time, around 1:30 pm. The NSUI function, on the contrary continued upto around 3:45 pm. When a query to this effect was raised by media persons, Minister of state for Telecom Sachin Pilot, he feigned ignorance about it and said he had no knowledge whether there was any other scheduled function in the Hall. The NSUI leadership of Jammu justifying their presence attributed this 'goof up' to parents and school authorities. "The parents and school authorities are in the habit of getting children in advance for hours…..it is none of or faults because the Hall in any way had to be left unused for at least two hours between the two functions", said one of the senior functionaries of NSUI. J&K Academy of Art and culture under whose control the Abhinav theatre auditorium falls maintained that they will look as to why and how things went wrong. Though the fact remains Academy people are also responsible for the mess created today by overlapping two functions. However, official sources maintained that a private group had booked the auditorium for Friday and their function was schedule to begin at 1.00 p.m. But due to some last minute changes the NSUI sponsored tribute ceremony, earlier scheduled to take place in Jammu university was rescheduled at Abhinav theatre in the morning .This was done to avoid any drama organizers feared the other faction of NSUI might create in front of the senior leaders, primarily the Union minister. The J&k Academy of Art and culture, it is also learnt had failed to communicate to the organizers of children's programme about the probable change of timings leading to chaotic conditions.
