Day of road mishaps: 25 killed, 120 hurt in Rajouri, Reasi | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 21: It turned out to be a day of road mishaps today. In the four incidents, which occured between 5.30 am to 7pm, 25 persons, including an army Major, a police Headconstable and over a dozen youth who were returning homes in Mahore villages after appearing in a police recruitment test, were killed and at least 120 others, including Vaishno Devi pilgrims and school children, wounded in the mountain-locked districts of Rajouri and Reasi. Army authorities woke up to a tragedy when their Tata Sumo collided head-on with a tipper at Balshama near Dharamshal in Sunderbani area of Rajouri at about 5.30 am. In the collision, Major Vasant Gourav of Maharashtra got killed and three others were wounded, police sources said. The condition of two of the injured was stated to be critical. They were identified as Signalman VK Sharma of Corps of Signals and Sepoy Antony Swamy of 27 Madras. The tipper driver was arrested and his vehicle seized, the sources added, saying a case had been registered against him. In the other incident, six army personnel lost their lives and five others sustained critical injuries when their vehicle spun out of control of the driver and plunged into a 200-ft-deep gorge at Dungakala near Pir Badesar in Chingus, Rajouri, at about 8 am. The dead were identified as sepoy Venkat Rao Vohra of 201 Engineer Regiment, sepoy Tesh Singh, lance naik Rajesh Gulra of 306 Field Regiment, lance naik Parminder Kumar of 306 Field Regiment, signalman Sanjay Kumar Singh of Signals and lance naik Deviha. While two of them died on the spot, three succumbed to their wounds on way to hospital and one died in the hospital, the sources added. The injured were undergoing treatment at military hospital, Rajouri. The condition of all of them was stated to be serious by the doctors attending on them. Army had ordered a court of inquiry to find out exact cause of the two incidents involving its personnel, defence ministry spokesman, Lt Col Biplab Nath said. Another tragedy struck Reasi at about 8 am when an overloaded bus crammed with 73 passengers, mostly those who were returning homes after taking a police recruitment test, went out of the control of its driver and plunged into a deep gorge, resulting in the death of 18 people and injuries to 55. The ill-fated bus (JK02E/6571) was on its way from Reasi to Mahore, sources said. As the recruitment test for constables for Mahore's male and female candidates was held Thursday in Reasi town, several young boys and girls from the area had come to try their luck. When the test ended in the evening, the last bus for Mahore had already left Reasi bus stand. All of them then spent the night at Reasi and left for homes in the morning. Sources said when the bus reached Bidda, its driver lost control over the steering as a result of which it fell into a gorge. At least 10 of the bus occupants died on the spot, six died on way to Reasi district hospital, while two succumbed to their injuries at the GMC Hospital here. The dead were identified as Abdul Aziz, son of Sultan of Bagga, Rubina Kousar, daughter of Bahadur Ali of Shikari, Mohammad Iqbal, son of Bashir Ahmad of Deval, Mukhtiar Ahmad, son of Khushi Mohammad of Darmari, Ashok Singh, son of Lal Singh of Channa Kote, Rattan Singh, son of Vir Singh of Malas, Tripta Devi, wife of Vaishno Gandotra of Ward No 10, Reasi, Bashir Ahmad, son of Mohammad Ismail of Kheral, Ritu Devi, daughter of Prem Singh of Karuwa, Sanjeet Singh, son of Lal Singh of Salal, Fateh Mohammad, son of Fazi of Ind, Ghulam Rasool, son of Munir of Kheral, Jamuna Devi, wife of Janki Dass of Garhi, Mohammad Ishaq, son of Ghulam Rasool of Mahore, Mohammad Shafi, son of Sain of Lancha, Angrez Singh, son of Puran Singh of Mamankote, Abdul Hafiz, son of Mohammad Younas of Mahore and Headconstable Dildar Singh, son of Jodh Singh of Pouni Parakh, Reasi. Soon after the mishap, locals and police started the rescue operation and removed the victims to the Reasi district hospital in private and police vehicles. Sixteen people were pronounced dead in the hospital. Seventeen of the seriously injured were airlifted to the GMC Hospital where Abdul Hafiz and Dilbar died in the evening, taking the death toll to 18. Dilbar, who was at present posted at the Ban Ganga police in Katra, was going home. Sources said overspeeding and overloading were the reasons behind the incident. SP (traffic police) Alok Kumar, however, said the tragedy struck after the road sank at Bidda. Twenty two Vaishno Devi pilgrims were injured when the bus (UP23A/9035) carrying them hit a roadside hill at Moorie near Katra. The bus was on its way from Katra to Uttar Pradesh. The mishap occured when the bus brakes failed. Twenty of the injured were identified as Bishno, Bua Devi, Neembhatti, Om Prakash, Kusum Lata, Babu Singh, Chotu Halwai, Veeru, Monu, Om Vir, Beena, Ajay, Boorie, Som, Sant Ram, Om Prakash, Nanak Singh, Deepak, Shiv Shankar and Atinder, all residents of Moradabad. They were admitted to the Katra hospital. Four of them were, however, later referred to the GMC Hospital after their condition did not show any signs of improvement. At least 35 school children aged between 10-15 years were injured when the bus in which they were travelling overturned in the middle of the road at Bhambla near Sunderbani at about 7 pm. They were returning homes at Sunderbani after an excursion in a Reasi park. All of them were students of a private school at Sunderbani. Sources said 12 of them sustained critical injuries while the others survived with minor brusies. They were admitted to a local hospital. One of them was, however, referred to the GMC Hospital here following deterioration in his condition.
