Unscheduled power cuts turn CCTVs 'ineffective' | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 22: The Close Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) installed by the security agencies at vital points to have the first visual of any terror related incidents in Jammu may prove 'ineffective' as their working is at the mercy of the Power Development Department (PDD). If the sources in Police Department are to be believed, majority of CCTVs installed on vital points remained non-functional for hours together, courtesy unscheduled power cuts. "The functioning of these cameras is totally dependent on the availability of power supply as these cameras have not been provided special power lines," maintained sources. Sources said that security with the help of these CCTVs cannot be termed as fool proof because of frequent failure of the power supply and unscheduled power cuts. "What to talks about the areas having no electronic metering, the localities having cent percent electronic metering are not being provided smooth supply of power," they said. When asked about streamlining of the security in cities in wake of grim power scenario, police authorities expressed helplessness and stated that inverter or generator facilities are not possible at each and every point. A senior police officer posted at Police Control Officer, who wished not to be named, said that 16 CCTV cameras have been installed in Jammu city to watch the activities in different areas round the clock. If at any place any toward activity is noticed, the staff at the police control room immediately informed the concerned Station House Officer (SHO), and teams of "flying squad" to take cognizance of the incident. He also informed that whatever was captured by these was recorded for further use. But, he was quick to add that these cameras are of no use in situation of power failure. He also stated that Police Head Quarter (PHQ) was planning to install 75-100 CCTV cameras in Jammu city to further improve the security scenario of the winter capital. To check anti-social elements and prevent any untoward incident, the Police department had established 16 CCTV cameras at sensitive places in the Jammu city such as Bikram Chowk, Satwari, Jammu Airport, Raghunath Mandir area, Jammu Railway Station, Jewel Chowk, and Panjtirthi area of old city besides others crowded points. As per police sources, similar CCTV cameras have already been installed at crowded places in Srinagar, now police decided to handle these anti social activaties will install (CCTV) Cameras, and more 22 districts and check the militant's activities. Under the project, about 35 CCTV cameras would be installed at Katra but main problem is that electricity. Chief Engineer PDD Mohammad Qasim stated that there were indeed power cuts in the areas having CCTVs cameras and there was no demand as well as proposal from the police department to provide round the clock uninterrupted power supply to the CCTV cameras.
