Custodial killings no more an issue with Jammu politicians
5/23/2010 12:03:48 AM

ET REPORT
JAMMU, May 22: Custodial deaths- a favorite slogan of politicians of J&K which they use as weapon to take on government at any point of time, it appears is no more same with Jammu based leaders. Despite hue and cry by locals over the alleged custodial death of youth in Bakshi Nagar vicinity, not a single political leader of any political party has bothered to visit bereaved family to enquire about truth.
It has been seen in the past that in order to express concern and solidarity with victmised familes, politicians lose no time on such issues as and when they erupt in any part of the state. In fact almost all parties have been seen hijacking every such issues apparently for political gains. But it is ironic that in this particular case there is complete silence from the political quarters. Not even a single political leader from any party deemed it proper to visit the bereaved family who along with some local people staged protest demonstration, crying something foul has happened.
The real satisfaction however remains that Government has ordered an enquiry in the case and assured that who so ever found guilty would be punished. But does this justify that any person who is taken for questioning to police station, looses life in dubious circumstances and was shifted to hospital. Isn't it an issue worth to be raised by politicians in a loud and vociferous manner ?Deceased Paramjeet Singh son of Thakur Singh being a poor fellow and having no political affiliations were thrown at the mercy of government by politicians (so called well wishers of Jammu people).
"If family members of deceased have some apprehensions , needless to say that there should be thorough enquiry in the case and those found guilty should be punished sternly……..justice should prevail and culprits should be brought to book" said Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party leader, Harsh Dev Singh. He said that his party representatives will visit to bereaved family to enquire about the incident.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which is known for its anti-custodial killings slant and virtually fights against it in Kashmir is silent over this incident. PDP leaders in Jammu did not even try to utter a single word over the episode, leave alone visiting the victim's family . It speaks volumes about double policy of party, as in Kashmir they did not miss a single chance to project such cases as human rights violation but for Jammu region the yard stick for similar issue differs.
Bhartiya Janata Party State President, Shamsher Singh Manhas, when asked why his party showed cool response in highlighting alleged custodial killing of youth, replied that neither the case was clear in nature as custodial death nor any body approached us to submit the factual details. "We are not aware about the case" he said and added that for various previous cases of custodial deaths BJP has played a vital role to fetch justice in favour of victims.
