PM shelves UPA anniversary bash

NEW DELHI, May 22: Shockwaves ran through Delhi in the wake of tragic loss of lives in the crash of an Air India plane at Manglore airport early this morning.
Most official engagements were given up by Prime Minister and his colleagues. And among them was a function that was to be held at 7, Race Course Road residence of Manmohan Singh here to mark the completion of first year in office by the Government led by him in his present or second term as Prime Minister.
One-hundred-and-fifty-eight people out of 166 on board have perished in the air crash while there were just eight survivors and the most of them suffered varying levels of injuries.
Thus, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh decided to postpone the function that was billed to be held at his residence today to mark the day when he had taken oath as Prime Minister a year ago on May 22, 2009.
The PMO issued a statement, saying "the Prime Minister expressed his deep condolences at the grievous loss of life resulting from the Air India crash that took place in Mangalore early this morning. The Prime Minister spoke both to the Home Minister and to the Minister of Civil Aviation who briefed him on the ongoing rescue operations being conducted at the site of the crash.
"The Prime Minister has instructed that Rs 2 lakhs for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those injured may be sanctioned from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund and further that all possible assistance may be provided to the bereaved families.
"As a mark of respect to those who perished in this tragic incident, the function today at the Prime Minister's Residence to mark the completion of the first year of the second term of the UPA Government has been postponed."
The Vice President M Hamid Ansari has also expressed his condolences over the loss of lives in the Air India Express plane crash. In a message, he said: "I am deeply grieved and shocked at the tragic loss of life resulting from the Air India flight IX-892 crash that took place in Mangalore early this morning. I join all citizens in sending condolences to the members of the bereaved families and praying to the Almighty to grant them the strength to withstand this immense loss."
