1st Open TT C'ship begins

UDHAMPUR, May 23: 1st Open Table Tennis Championship was held today at the headquarters of Dudu Basantgarh Sub Division located at Basantgarh. This maiden Championship was organized at Community Hall, Basantgarh in which lot of amateur as well as professional players from across the length and breadth of this far flung Sub Division participated. The players' profiles included students, professionals, Government and private sector employees. This rarest sports Championship which was held in one of the remotest areas of the state was also sponsored by J&K Bank and Airtel. Although the preliminary rounds were being held during last two days, the quarter finals, semi finals and finals were held today in which Shri Amit Sharma, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Dudu Basantgarh won the Championship Trophy after beating Shri Ranjeet Sharma, an employee of J&K Bank, Basantgarh Branch in three consecutive sets (20-15, 20-17, 20-16) in 'Best of Five' Finals. Third position in this Championship was sealed by Shri Sunil Kumar, a pharmacist and local of Basantgarh who had beaten another local, Shri Tahir Mubeen in a tough third place play-off competition. Co-incidentally, SDM, Amit Sharma, who was also the chief mentor behind the organization of this event in very little time and challenging conditions, was also the Chief Guest on the said occasion and distributed the prizes amongst the winners and consolation prizes among the support staff. This event got a great support of the residents of nearby areas and lot of locals including women and children were amongst the enthusiastic spectators who participated in this maiden Table Tennis event held at Basantgarh. They also requested the administration to organize more such events in future.
The head of civil administration in the Sub Division Shri Amit Sharma, SDM assured the public that many more such events shall be organized there in the near future including Rural Sports-cum-Cultural Meet with support from concerned departments, private sector, central and other state agencies. At the same time, he advised the locals of the Sub Division to encourage more and more children and students of Sub Division to develop the spirit of Sportsmanship by encouraging them to participate in different kinds of sports and extra curricular activities in the times to come, as they can develop strong potential to compete with their competitors in cities and urban areas with routine practice and participation.
