Politicians responsible for prolonged turmoil in Kashmir | | | Are Kashmiris masters of their destiny ?This question is being debated in the political and public circles in Jammu and Kashmir after the Hurriyat Conference Chairman Molvi Umar Farooq announced in Srinagar that neither India nor Pakistan but the people of kashmir are masters of their destiny. He said on Friday that Kashmiris alone, not India or Pakistan, can decided their future. In 1947 Sheikh Abdullah was the undisputed leader of the people of Kashmir and his decision to allow Jammu and Kashmir to join India had peoples' mandate because when the instrument of Accession was signed by the Maharaja and later endorsed by Sheikh Abdullah not a single voice was raised against it.If it was so what happened during these 60 years that forced leaders like Molvi Umar Farooq to claim that majority of people in Kashmir are for "Azadi".If pro-Pak and pro-Azadi whispers are heard in Kashmir it is not the result of any major curbs on fundamental rights of the people in the valley.Instead of restrictions people have enjoyed maximum degree of religious, economic and political freedom. If some restrictions have been imposed they have bee there only after the rise of Pakistan sponsored terrorist activities in the state. If people have suffered death and destruction in the Kashmir valley during the last 20 years Pakistan and not India is responsible for it.Besides Islamabad political leaders including the separatists, who have thrived on peoples' ignorance, have also been responsible for the current turbulence in the state.Today the Kashmir Mirwaiz talks of Kashmir for Kashmiris and Kashmiris being the sole masters of their fate and future and the same Molvi used to talk in favour of Indo-Pak dialogue for settling the Kashmir issue. What the Maulana said on Friday indicates that he wants people in Kashmir to be given the right to decide their future which means that he has started going closer to the ideas being propounded by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.Geelani has been harping on grant of right of self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. If it is so why should Molvi Umar and his colleagues in the Hurriyat Conference seek permission from Delhi for visiting Islamabad where they have been discussing the kashmir issue. Does the Maulana know that Pakistan will not accept any decision taken by the people of Kashmir which does not suit the internal and external policy of Islamabad ?Possibly not.Had the Maulana been aware of Islamabad's extra-territorial ambition as it has been saying that Kashmir is the "life-line" of Pakistan he would not have imposed conditions for the resumption of centre-Hurriyat dialogue.Indications are that Molvi Umar Farooq has been rattled by the assassination of his father,Molvi Farooq, and Abdul Gani Lone because he is not unaware of the agencies and elements that were responsible for the tragic incidents.Hence he is taking highly guarded steps so that those very agencies and elements that were responsible for the killing of Molvi Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone were not provoked to target the Hurriyat leaders. It is easy to incite people to defiance and violence and it is very difficult to control the situation later.Maulana is wrong when he says people in Kashmir do not want jobs, economic concessions and contracts.Had he been right in his assessment there would have been no public uproar against over five lakh youths registered in the employment exchanges.People in Kashmir want to taste economic prosperity besides political and religious rights which have been usurpsed to some extent by Pakistan sponsored militancy. The basic tragedy in Kashmir has been that leaders, belonging to the mainstream and the separatist camps, have misled Kashmiris. For those tasting power state's accession is final. Those in the opposition usually dispute the irrevocability of the accession and in certain cases they question the quantum of accession. And when the political shops do a roaring business why should not political leaders keep on misleading people. So long people continue to be misled politicians need not worry about their future.
