Massive fire in Reasi hills | | | JAMMU: Four days after Trikuta Hills in Katra became victim of a blaze, a massive forest fire broke out in the nearby Reasi hills ahead of Mari village. The fire started from compartment No 34 late last night and soon spread to the adjoining at least two compartments, engulfing a total forest area of over 30 hectares, official sources said. The sky high flames and the billowing smoke clouds were visible from the Reasi town too. Teams of officials of forest department, forest protection force and police were constituted to beat the fire and stop it from spreading towards other compartments and the nearby villages, the sources added. Headed by forest range officer Surendernath, these teams were constituted by divisional forest officer, Dr V S Senthil Kumar.The Reasi district's deputy commissioner and SSP also ordered the deployment of police and CRPF personnel to assist forest officials engaged in extinguising fire. Sources said the flames were brought under control today."Forests are every year put on fire by nomads who move to higher reaches along with their livestock in summers in search for green pastures," the sources added. Fire had also burnt a large cover of forests in Trikuta Hills close to Adh Kunwari on May 18 night.
