Pak targets six forward posts in Poonch Ceasefire Violation
5/23/2010 11:47:47 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 23: Violating ceasefire for the fifth time this month, Pak Army today fired at six forward Indian positions on the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati sub-sector of Poonch.
Four rockets were also fired by the enemy troops, but these exploded in no man's land causing no harm to life and property of either army or civilians, official sources said.
Sources said Pak troops opened the mouth of their guns from their Dakku and Peeple border posts at about 9.05 am, targetting Kranti, Chajja Maan, Gorda, Kripan, Balnoie and Mankote forward Indian posts.
India retaliated. A heavy exchange of small arms fire continued between the two sides up to about 10.30 am, the sources added. Four rockets fired from across the LoC exploded in the vicinity of Maan post, but these caused no harm.
Sources said the intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides continued up to about 11.15 am after which the guns on both sides fell silent. "This is a clear case of ceasefire violation by Pak as nearly 20 rockets and 4 mortars were fired from the other side targeting our forward posts from early morning forcing us to respond," 16 corps Brigadier General Staff (BGS), Brigadier Gurdeep Singh said.
He further said, "We have sounded an alert and troops have been asked to remain vigilant. The firing was without any provocation."
The BGS said that this is second ceasefire violation in past one week from the Pakistan side. He however ruled out any attempt being made to push in infiltrators by using firing as cover to push militants.
Sources however, said this was the fourth ceasefire violation by Pakistan in KG area this month and fifth in Jammu region. On May 18, two army jawans were killed and four others injured in ambush by suspected infiltrators at Nanga Tekri in Krishna Ghati area.
Sources said these infiltrators could be behind the today's attack on forward Indian positions. A massive operation was on to hunt them down, the sources added.
Meanwhile, a joint patrol party of Rashtriya Riffles and SoG recovered huge quantities of arms and ammunition from a hide out in Surankote area of the Poonch.
Official reports said that during the searches security forces recovered 25 UBGL, 1 Chinese pistol with six magazines, 47 IEDs fuses, 4 IED batteries, 57 AK rounds, 34 Pika gun rounds and 8 detonators from Chanwali Dhoke area of the Surankote.
