PM renews his peace offer for J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, May 24: By renewing his offer for talks with all groups in Jammu and Kashmir at his Press conference held here today, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tried to set the tone for his two-day visit to the border State slated for early next month. Answering a question at the Press conference held at the completion of his Government's first year in office in its second term, Prime Minister expressed his willingness to talk to separatists and the militants supported by them in case they were ready to give up arms and abjure violence. Though there is nothing new in this since Manmohan Singh has made similar offer when he visited Kashmir last on 28 October 2009, it nonetheless shows keenness on his part to kick start the process of normalistation once again vis-à-vis Kashmir Valley that has been caught in strife and violence for now over two decades. Now as India has warmed up to reduce what it calls "trust deficit" between New Delhi and Islamabad, a wish that Manmohan Singh again reiterated in his today's Press conference, the response of All Party Hurriyat Conference is going to be crucial from Centre's point of view. In any case by extending an olive branch again to disgruntled sections in Kashmir, Delhi's top leadership has once again shown its willingness to keep its diplomatic efforts on for easing the situation in the Valley. This is often called as peace process though it gets aborted as soon as it gets underway. Thus, the Centre now is making all out efforts. This is more so since visits by not only Prime Minister but also UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to J&K have been announced through this summer. Significantly, in reply to another question Prime Minister did not give any time frame for the hanging of Afzal Guru who faces death sentence in Parliament attack case of December 2001. Obviously, Manmohan Singh refrained from committing himself about the hanging because apprehensions are that this could set Valley on the boil once again.
