SRS protests tax on Amarnath pilgrims
5/25/2010 11:27:30 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 25: Activists of Shri Ram Sena (SRS) held a protest demonstration here today at Ambphalla Chowk against the state government's proposed move to impose tax on Amarnath pilgrims.
Raising anti-government slogans, the protesting SRS activists demanded revocation of tax on the Amarnath yatries.
Police reached the sport and dispersed the protesters by using mild force.
State President, Shri Ram Sena (SRS), Rajiv Mahajan while addressing the activists asked the state government to revoke the imposition of charge on Amarnath pilgrims otherwise activists of SRS will not hesitate to take harsh steps against the government in future and intensify their protest demonstrations including observing a Bandh in Jammu Province.
He said that charging of Rs 25,000 from each Langer party is like a 'Jazia' being imposed by Talibans from Sikh community in Pakistan.
Rajeev said such a decision of the NC-Congress coalition is totally discriminatory and aimed at hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindus.
He said it is unfortunate that the successive governments in the state, including the present one, have always worked towards taking care of the religious sentiments of Muslims and discriminated on religious matters relating to Hindus in particular.
The government has created all facilities for smooth pilgrimage of Hajjis, including operation of direct flights from Srinagar to Saudi Arabia and subsidy for Haj Yatris.
We do not oppose these facilities to our Muslim brethren but at the same time, ask the government not to create hurdles in smooth Yatras of Hindus in different part of the State, he added. Strongly opposing the charging of Rs 25,000 as non-refundable security from the social and religious organizations willing to set Langars in the state during Amarnath Yatra, Rajiv said if government will mitigate their demand of revocation of tax till June11, SRS will withdraw its decision of observing Jammu Bandh on June 12.
He also appealed to all the Jammuites particularly traders community to extend their support for the cause of Hindu brethrens who visit Jammu and Kashmir for seeking blessing of lord Shiva at Amaranth cave.
Rajiv also condemned the police action on the SRS activists while they were protesting for the cause of Amarnath pilgrims.
