Nasir suggests privatization of sanitation | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, May 25: Minister of State for Housing & Urban Development, Nasir Aslam Wani today suggested privatization of sanitation and waste management to provide a clean and pollution free environment in the urban centres of the State. Participating in a panel discussion, "Solid waste management & water management treatment for sustainable development" organized by FCIK at SKICC here today, the Minister invited entrepreneurs to take up the challenge and help Government in building clean cities and towns in the State. Nasir said Srinagar and Jammu alone contribute 700 to 800 metric tones of solid waste daily, the treatment of which is a real challenge to cope with. He said since these two cities accommodate a large chunk of floating population and tourist rush, the quantum of daily produced solid waste also keeps on piling up. In his intervention, Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Me'raj Ahmad Kakroo who also holds additional charge of Commissioner, SMC said his organization plans to privatize sanitation in a phased manner and dustbins would be kept at prominent places. He detailed several initiatives taken to maintain sanitation. Vice-Chairman, Lakes & Waterways Development Authority, Irfan Yasin, Vice-Chairman, Srinagar Development Authority, Syed Kifayat Rizvi, legal expert, Gopal Sharma, Vinod Kumar of Mailhem Engineering Pvt. Ltd.and others also shared their views on the subject.
