PED 'trading horses' now on JU playgrounds
Entry restricted for joggers, players
5/25/2010 11:32:55 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 25: Two play grounds in Jammu University (JU) have been closed for walkers and joggers who used to workout manually for the last several years there every morning.
Earlier, entry cards were issued to walkers and joggers to restrict trespassers, which was a good gesture indeed. But closing both the play grounds to restrict walkers, joggers and sports lovers is not in the interest of sports personnel, students and civil society. Surprisingly, instead of encouraging sports and players, Physical Education Department (PED) is trading horses by introducing "Pay and Play" mechanism in JU.
It is no for first time when JU is in news for its hierarchy but couple of days before sports persons were restricted for playing on the grounds and were forcibly thrown out by using police force. When situation was apprized to Director PED by Surinder Singh Bunty, a crude reply came that university is not being funded by chief minister. So it has to generate funds of its own.
To express resentment and annoyance on this count, Bunty addressed a press conference against PED. Well placed sources informed that in this regard political advisor to CM, Davinder Rana also intervened and suggested authorities to allow the sports and walkers activities as universities are bridges between civil society, academicians and students. But no change was apparently seen.
Despite charging fee ranging from Rs 250 to Rs 300 for walkers and joggers and Rs 300 per month for players , it speaks volumes about the intentions of authorities at the helm of affairs in making sports as a trade. On one hand every minister and bureaucrat are parroting for encouraging of sports and on the other hand "Pay and Play" like yardsticks are being introduced. Looking through prism into the PED style of working , menace of adhocism is at its peak and the main reason for imposing piteous conditions and terms over sports and players. No only has this, but present Director is also said to be working on adhoc basis and there is professional instructor for MPed and BPed aspirants. Such regulations are visibly introduced and imposed in JU only and no other university including Kashmir University has such rules.
To cut short interference of civil society from campus, authorities have already restricted parking inside camps. With the result on the gates of University JDA parking has come up which not only charges Rs 5 to scooters and Rs 10 to car parkers but also add to traffic halt menace. If this approach continues, days are not far away when students and professors only could be seen around this prestigious academic institution from 10 am to 5 pm and deserted looks in morning and evenings. Campus would turn in a monument and sports personnel, walkers and joggers will find alternative. Of what use these two play grounds would remain is worth to watch!......
