early times report
JAMMU, May 25: A day after police took Meenakshi Sharma's body in custody at the Jogi Gate cremation ground here, her bother arrived from New Delhi today and performed the last rites on it.
Meenakshi died under mysterious circumstances at her in-laws' house at Janipura Friday last. A day before, she had celebrated 4th birthday of her son.
However, instead of bringing the matter to the notice of police, her husband Ajay Sethi dumped the body in their house for three days and took it for cremation to the Jogi Gate cremation ground yesterday. While the body was placed on the pyre and preparations were being made to consign it to flames, police, acting on a tip-off, reached there and took the body in their custody. Cops removed the body to the GMC hospital where post-mortem was conducted on it to ascertain the cause of death. Ajay was also detained. During sustained interrogation, he told police that on the fateful day when he returned home after seeing
off his father at the railway station, he found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan hook.
He said he got panicky and did not inform police for the fear that he could be framed in the case. He said an altercation between them could be the cause of the provocation.
Meenakshi's parents hail from New Delhi. After police contacted them yesterday, her brother Harish Sharma reached Jammu this morning and consigned the body to flames in the presence of police personnel. Police had registered a case in this connection. Ajay's interrogation was also on.
