100-member VDC company to check infiltration | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 25: To assist BSF and police in checking infiltration from Kanhachak and Domana areas here, a 100-member village defence committee (VDC) company has been raised. VDC members are the volunteers from the border villages, who have been trained by police in handling arms and ammunition. These VDCs would be operational on the second and third line of defence along with police, a police officer said. "The companies are being raised in all the bordering belts along 198-km stretch from Akhnoor to Lakhanpur to counter increased infiltration attempts and to strengthen security blanket," he added. Some special police officers (SPOs) were also part of these VDCs, the officer added. "They will actively perform their task along with police and apart from manning borders, the teams will act as watchdogs in their native villages situated in the bordering belts," he added. The VDCs, who underwent a specialised training session organised by the state police, today displayed their skills of shooting and fighting terrorism at Chinore firing range on the city outskirts. "These will participate in maintaining security of bordering villages in Kanhachak and Domana areas,'' he said and added they had been issued .303 rifles. "I am actively working as a VDC member and cooperating police in maintaining vigil along the border regions and we have been given special training of identifying suspicious movements and whenever we see any non-familiar face or notice any suspect, we inform police," VDC member Kartar Chand said.
