JAMMU, May 24: "I am not a prime ministerial stuff," Manmohan Singh had told a select group of scribes in Jammu during the 2004 general elections. And, the way he was catagorical at the Sunday Press Meet in New Delhi that he was not going anywhere just yet, the memories of his 2004 press conference at Asia Hotel here got refreshed. He was not prime minister that time and had been camping here to campaign for his party candidates.
At the hotel here, he was flanked by Congress veteran Mangat Ram Sharma. During a question-answer session, when he was asked about his reaction in case he became prime minister, he had humbly stated in his typical low voice:"I am not a prime ministerial stuff."
He had not minced any words while saying so. And, this was followed by a laughter. But he looked confident and composed, with no visible expression on his face about what he had stated. As the interaction progressed, he was constantly badgered with queries about who could be the prime minister if UPA formed the government at the Centre and about his relations with Sonia Gandhi. But he had tactfully and firmly remarked: "As a soldier of the party, my job is to do work to my satisfaction."
The man, who became prime minister days after he said he was not competent to lead the country, held a very low opinion of himself. It also mirrored the man within: calm, confident, composed and fucussed. It also showed the way he walked the proverbial "tortoise race" to reach the top.
In the yesterday's 'Meet the Press', programme too, which was held in the union capital, there was no distraction when he said he was concerned more to accomplish his task on hand. Speaking on variety of issues concerning the country, he showcased the politician he had matured into.
There is another interesting point about him. Journalists cannot expect from him the material which can make screaming headlines. He uses measured words and perhaps does not believe in lipshooting.
