Blistering heat waves keep Jammuites indoors | | | ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 26: Jammuites today continued to experience searing heat waves for the second day with mercury still hovering above 45 degree Celsius mark, the highest experienced this summer season as well as in the month of May in the past eight years. There was no respite from soaring temperature as the unprecedented heat waves that gripped the entire Jammu region for the past one week continued to be harsh and the mercury remained at a record 45.5 degrees Celsius mark. Normal life was thrown out of gear in the region with people preferring to stay indoors. Bikers and pedestrians had a harrowing time on roads whereas few schools in the city have also announced summer break, about one week in advance of scheduled timing for observing vacations from June 1. The shopkeepers and roadside vendors said that the blistering heat waves have severely affected their business for the past one week as people preferred to stay indoors following hot and humid conditions. Housewives also had a harrowing time due to frequent and unscheduled power cuts. Weather experts however, said several factors have gone into making this a summer of unprecedented heat. "Since past one year, the region has witnessed scanty rainfall and snowfall which seem to be the key factor for unprecedented heat waves this summer. Had there been sufficient snowfall on mountains the situation was not alarming one," maintained weathermen. Talking to the Early Times, Dr M K Khushu, Chief Scientist Agrometeorology, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu said, "The temperature witnessed no variation today and the mercury continued to touch 45.5 deg C. It was the second hottest day in the last eight years. The minimum temperature was recorded at 22.6 deg C." He further said, "Temperature in Jammu continue to hover above 3 to 5 deg C in days to come and the possibility of relief from blazing sun is bleak." The Met officials however have predicted dust storm and medium rainfall in next couple of days, saying "The dust storm and heavy wind flow may provide temporary relief to the people for next couple of days."
