Soz playing shots, Azad stands completely isolated | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 26: Saif-ud-Din Soz was never a Congressman. He was an ideologue of the National Conference. He joined the Congress only some ten years ago, when the National Conference expelled him from the party on the charge that he violated the party whip and voted against the BJP-led government at the Centre in 1998. Ever since then, Soz has been working tirelessly for strengthening the Congress party in the state. Soz, unlike Farooq Abdullah and others of his ilk, proved his commitment to the ideology he had been adhering to and established that he could go to any extent to hold his own against all odds. It was his single vote that resulted in the fall of the Vajpayee-led government. The dedication with which he worked for the Congress impressed the Congress high command to the extent that the latter showed the Congress veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad the door and appointed Soz as the JKPCC president, the highest position the Congress high command could give to any Congressman in the state. To be president of the JKPCC is a great achievement in the sense that Jammu and Kashmir State is a highly volatile and politically very crucial state. That the Congress high command pinned its full faith in Soz established that the latter had won over the former. As president of the JKPCC, Soz has, unlike the unpopular, undependable and unscrupulous Azad, all along recognized the merit, sought to bring everyone on board and worked for the unity in the party. It's no wonder that all the Congressmen, barring a few disgruntled supporters of Azad, who have no mass base, have rallied round Soz, who is simple and soft spoken. The entire JKPCC is with him. Leave alone a couple of office-bearers who have been opposing Soz for reasons personal or at the behest of the defeated, isolated and desperate Azad. Almost all the effective Congress ministers, who enjoy the confidence of the people, are also with Soz. Those who are not with Soz are only making some noises that has no impact whatever on the organization as they, like Azad, have fallen from the grace. The fact is that Soz has proved his leadership by carrying along everyone, even his opponents, and by overlooking the controversial activities and antecedents of the followers of Azad, who is moving heaven and earth to destabilize Soz and establish his control over the JKPCC, something quite unachievable. Azad's inning in Jammu and Kashmir is over. He may put in any amount of efforts to restore the ground he has lost in the state, but he will not achieve any success because he, unlike Soz, has only ditched, exploited and destroyed his own supporters to further his own selfish intentions. Azad is depending on those who have no say either in the organization or in the public. Azad, in short, just cannot compete with Soz, who is a man of commitment; who says what he believes in; and who doesn't stoop low to promote his personal interests. It would be better if Azad derives his inspiration from Soz and work for strengthening the Congress party in the state at grassroots level. If he thinks that he can destabilize Soz, then obviously he is living in a fool's paradise. Azad just cannot compete with Soz. He is only wasting his time by instigating his ineffective men to create difficulties for Soz.
