5/30/2010 11:24:29 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, May 30: J&K Kisan Tehreek has demanded immediate relief to the peasants whose standing crops and fruit has been damaged due to heavy rains and hail storm.
In a statement, general secretary Kisan Tehreek Ghulam Nabi Malik, has urged the government to take up measures for assessment of the losses on urgent basis, especially in South Kashmir where sizeable population of agriculturists and fruit growers has been worst hit.
Malik said that present dispensation should set a new precedent of extending prompt succor to the farming community, who suffer in such natural calamities.
He said the peasants toil hard to earn their livelihood but vagaries of weather often strike them and shatter their economy. In such situations, the grower community looks forward for support and it becomes obligation for the government to be forthcoming and supportive.
Malik reiterated his demand for effective implementation of Crop Insurance Act for the benefit of farming community.
