Congress, NC responsible Gujjars' plight: Chaman | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 30: Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has charged the Congress-National Conference coalition of being really responsible for persisting backwardness amongst the Gujjar Bakkerwals. BJP alleged that these parties have been exploiting many of their religious and other heads to use them for their vote bank politics and depriving them of their due rights under communal and other considerations. Challenging the claims of the leaders of the coalition at a Gurjar function yesterday, the leader of the BJP Legislature Party, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta in a hard hitting statement today said that it is far from facts that either the Congress or the National Conference had ever worked for grant of Scheduled Tribes status the Gujjar Bakkerwals of this State. It was only during the Governor's Rule in 1990, the Governor had recommended for this status and it was Chander Shekhar as Prime Minister, who accepted the recommendation in 1991. Prof Gupta regretted that the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi and the head of the National Conference, Dr Farooq Abdullah made certain false claims that they were having a great heart for these poor people and always worked for their upliftment. But their claims are self contradictory when the leaders of both these parties shed their crocodile tears over their plight of backwardness and poverty, he added and said that both these parties were in power for most of the time during the past over six decades after the independence of the country and they cannot escape from responsibility for persistent poverty amongst them. Prof Gupta asserted that the National Conference is even opposed to the grant of Scheduled Tribes status to Gujjar Bakkerwals. In this connection, he said that in their Autonomy Report on page181, the Farooq led National Conference government had clearly pleaded for omitting of Article 342 under which the Scheduled Tribes status to Gujjar Bakkerwals has been granted. It is different matter that this Report of the National Conference was rejected by the NDA Government at the Centre led by Atal Behari Vajpayee, otherwise the intentions of the NC Government were very clear to deprive Gujjars from this status. Prof. Gupta regretted that the Managers of the Trust of this Gujjar Cultural Centre Heritage should at least had mentioned that what a substantial amount for this big building was provided by the Central Government during the NDA rule when the construction of this Centre was taken up in hand. It was about Rs 40 Lacs sanctioned by the NDA Government. Prof Gupta also accused both the Congress and the National Conference of dividing people on sectarian and regional lines. In this regard, he referred to the bad blood being created in the name of Paharies and Gujjar Bakkerwals, especially in the border belt of Poonch-Rajouri.
