12 Cops among 50 injured in Kashmir clashes | Book on Shopian rape victims released, memorial unveiled | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 30: At least fifty persons including twelve police men sustained injuries in clashes between stone pelting youth and the police at several places in Kashmir today as Majlis-e-Mushawarat released a book on Shopian rape victims and unveiled a memorial in their memory. Defying severe restrictions in down town Srinagar, stone pelting youth engaged the police and CRPF personnel in ding dong battles for quite some time today. The youth pelted stones at the police at Nowhatta, Gojwara, Bohri Kadal and along the Nallah Mar road. The police responded with tear smoke shells. Scores of protesters sustained injuries in the police action. A number of police men also got injured. Reports of stone pelting have been received from Baramulla and Sopore towns in North Kashmir. In South Kashmir Anantnag town witnessed massive demonstrations today. Stone pelting youth gave tough moments to the police at Mattan Chowk, Malakh Nag and other areas. The police cane charged the youth and later fired tear smoke shells to disperse them. In Shopian peaceful demonstrations continued all day. Hurriyat leaders were either placed under house arrest or took into custody enroute Shopian to foil Syed Ali Geelani's Shopian Chalo call. The Majlis-e-Mushwarat, a body that has been agitating the rape of two women Aasiya and Neelofar released a book on the victims. The book titled Shopian; Institutional denial of justice was released by father of Neelofar. Later Neelofar's husband and Aasiya's brother, Shakeel Ahmad unveiled a memorial bearing names of a number of women who were raped during the past two decades across Kashmir. It may be recalled that two women were allegedly raped by unknown persons during the night intervening May 29-30 last year at Shopian. The incident evoked severe reaction from the public. The government appointed a commission and entrusted he investigation to CBI. The people, however, rejected the commission report and the CBI findings.
