Encroachment of Govt land goes unabated | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 31: Increasing encroachment of government land show that the state has failed to put reigns on the land grabbers in Jammu and its adjoining areas in encroaching seasonal Nallah and rivers of the state. This is particularly true in the case of Khads (dry rivulets) in district Jammu, where most of them have been illegally encroached upon by the land grabbers allegedly in connivance with the political leaders and bureaucrats. The Balol Khad in block Bishnah in district samba is glaring example of government apathy, where almost half of the Khad has been encroach upon by the grabbers allegedly in connivance with revenue officials and political leaders. One could see the alleged grabbing at the Purmandal Morh adjoining National Highway 1-A. Locals alleged that a few years ago width of Balol Khad was more than hundred metres, but now it has reduced to mere 25-30 meters. Sanjay Sharma, also a local said that the entire land at Ratnu Chak, Jallo Chak and Chowadhi, including Khads belong to locals and not to the state government. But the revenue records informed that all land along rivers and seasonal nallahs is government land, it cannot be sold or encroached. Property dealers and other people involved in the encroachment used to bribe the revenue officials to have the ownership rights. Locals also maintained also that because of the encroachments, it was proving difficult for the water to flow smoothly during rains and floods. Locals also said from last few years the encroachment was almost complete near village Jallo Chak and the concerned departments is not taking any action. When Early Times tried to have the version of Chief Engineer, Department of Flood Control on the alleged grabbing of nallahs by land mafia, he could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
