Army on relief operations in Warwan, Marwah | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT KISHTWAR, May 31: Untimely & unseasonal snowfall during the month of May has taken its toll on the Gujjars & Bakkarwals who migrate to higher reaches in search of fresh pastures for their livestock. Most Deras had occupied their respective grazing grounds by early May. Heavy rainfall and snow in higher reaches has caught Deras off guard and unprepared. Over the weekend, information began trickling in from general area Warwan & Navapachchi of Marwah tehsil that about large scale losses in terms of livestock & property suffered by families. On learning about the calamity, army & the civil administration from Kishtwar activated their sources to gain information regarding its magnitude. It was soon established that a large number of livestock have perished over the past few days. In addition, several Gujjars & Bakkarwals had fallen ill. A joint party of army and civilian administration from Kishtwar immediately swung into action and organized rescue & relief operations in remote areas of Warwan. Today a joint relief column comprising of army doctors, civilian vetinary doctors, police personnel and officials from the District Headquarters' were airlifted from Kishtwar to Warwan. The team carried along with sufficient quantities of medicines both for the Deras as well as their livestock. The team will undertake simultaneous relief work in Warwan & Navapachchi areas for the next four to five days.
