Sohail beat Kamal to retain Senior Billiards title | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 31: Giving consistent performance, Sohail Khalid today retained the senior billiards title beating his senior and former champion, Kamal Rohmetra in the 20th Jammu District Billiards and Snooker Championships which concluded today at Billiards Hall here. Sohail made it a straight frame win with a one-sided second (100-17) and close third (100-92) game. Confident Sohail also struck highest 61 points break in the second frame thereby making Kamal virtually helpless. The score: 100-78, 100-17, 100-92. Pertinent to mention here that Sohail had a miraculous escape in the semi-finals played yesterday, winning the frames with wafer thin margin. State billiards champion, Sohail also has his credit billiards gold in the All India Forest Meet. In the valedictory function of this fortnight long championship, president of J&K Billiards and Snooker Association, Siddharth Sharma was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies besides other individual prizes. Among others present were Sports Officer, State Sports Council, Rajan Sharma, Ajay Sharma and Sheetal Gandotra. New faces at the top The 20th District Billiards and Snooker Championships concluded with new faces grabing the top positions replacing the seniors and other known names. In the shape of Nitin Sharma and Abhishek Goswami, the Jammu district got new champions in junior snooker and junior billiards respectively. Similarly, in senior snooker, young Nikhil Kapahi has clinched the title beating another upcoming cueist, Vidit Gouari. However, Sohail Khalid has maintained his consistency in billiards and won the title beating his senior, Kamal Rohmetra, who could not win even a single title this time. Moreover, two other seniors, Sanjeev Gupta and Vishal Abrol too failed to make their presence felt. Young cueists `directionless' It is high time for the J&K Billiards and Snooker Association to think beyond mere holding two annual events of district and state championships. The association must come out with certain specialized coaching camps aiming at providing these upcoming young boys, Nitin, Abhishek, Buhran and Vidit, the much needed exposure to make their presence felt at the national level. However, in the past the Association did make public statements to invite some national players for brief coaching camps in Jammu but of no avail.
