Srinagar-Leh highway open, stranded vehicles cleared | | | Early Times report Srinagar, May 31 : Both way traffic was today restored on 434- km-long Srinagar-Leh National Highway, which remained closed for three days due to fresh snowfall and landslides. All vehicles stranded on both sides of the Zojila for the past three days were cleared yesterday afternoon after the road was put through by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), a traffic police official said here today. He said the traffic was resumed this morning. However, vehicles on way to Srinagar from different parts of the Ladakh region would have to cross the Zojila before 1200 hrs. Similarly vehicles, including those carrying essentials, from here would be allowed to move from Sonamarg in the afternoon. Though the Highway, which remained closed from December last year due to snowfall and slippery road conditions, was opened for traffic a month earlier this year, fresh snowfall and landslides forced authorities to suspend the vehicular movement several times. Last week Zojila, Gumri, Machoi, Meenamarg, Matayan, Drass and Kharbu experienced fresh snowfall and landslides. Despite snowfall, the Drass-Kargil-Leh portion on the highway remained open for traffic. The Ladakh region remained cut off from the rest of the state for winter months due to heavy snowfall, particularly in Zojila area. The state and Centre have decided to construct a tunnel at Zojila to make it an all-weather road.
