EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 31: A youth, who only last week joined Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) ranks, today shot dead his commander, who was in the list of most wanted militants, in Krandi Dhar forests of Doda and later surrendered before security forces.
Police sources said Abdul Latief went missing under mysterious circumstances from his home at Krandi Dhar in Doda 10 days back. A missing report in this regard was lodged by his parents with the concerned police station, the sources added.
However, the wireless intercepts later suggested that he had joined HM ranks.
Sources said over some issue, he had a scuffle with HM commander Bashir Ahmad alias Chota Bashir in the morning in Krandi Dhar forests. Later, he shot the commander dead with the latter's AK rifle, the sources added.
Latief then took Bashir's AK rifle and two magazines, and came down to Lohara village near Dessa and surrendered before jawans of police and 10 Rashtriya Rifles (RR).
At Latief's instance, the troops recovered Bashir's body from the forests. It was evacuated to the Doda district hospital mortuary where post-mortem would be conducted on it tomorrow. Later, it would be handed over to his family members for last rites.
Bashir, who was in the list of most wanted HM commanders, had joined HM ranks in 2008. Since then, he was involved in several militancy related incidents in Doda district, sources said. Latief's sustained interrogation was on.
Defence PRO, Lt Col Biplab Nath said Bashir was killed by Latief last night.
Bashir was deeply involved in several terrorist activities, forcible recruitment of local youth in HM cadres and extortion, he added.
The PRO said the HM morale was at a all time low with reports of internecine fights within their ranks. The above incident took place due to the growing unrest amongst HM cadres operating in the area, he added.
