9 civilians, 5 army officers, 32 Cops die in 5 months

JAMMU, May 31: The state witnessed killing of one hundred and sixty eight persons during the past five months. The deceased include twenty-nine civilians, one hundred and seven militants, five army officers and thirty-two police and para-military personnel.
A local news agency while giving details said the year started with violent demonstrations at Sopore and Baramulla. Twenty persons including some police men sustained injuries in these clashes. On January 2, militants fired at CRPF personnel at Soura causing injury to two of them.
A police man, Mahesh Lal died in a massive explosion in JIC Baramulla. The fidayeen engaged the troops for more than two days in a Lal Chowk hotel on January 6. The attack left two militants, a police man and a civilian dead. Two media persons also sustained injuries in the attack.
In an exchange of fire between the militants and the CRPF at Pampore on January 8, twenty-two persons sustained injuries.
A student Anayat was shot dead by the CRPF personnel at Dalgate on January 9. The killing evoked massive demonstrations across Kashmir. Same day a civilian, Gulzar Ahmad of Pcihroo, Kulgam was shot dead by unidentified gunmen.
A fierce encounter at Thanola, Reasi on January 10 left two Hizb militants dead. Two soldiers sustained injuries in the encounter. Same day a released militant, Latif Ahmad Malik was killed by unidentified persons at Kalaroos, Kupwara.
Hizbul Mujahideen divisional commander, Muhammad Sharief died in a gun battle at Tangmarg on January 14.
Militants attacked police station Sopore on January 15 and killed constable Nazir Ahmad. A civilian Parvez Ahmad also lost his life in the attack.
Five police men including a DSP and SHO Tral sustained injuries in an IED explosion at Tral on January 19.
Manzoor Ahmad, a civilian of Haikhoonpora, Pattan died when IRPF personnel opened fire on a crowd on January 17.
In an encounter with the militants at Kishtwar on January 29, two army men got killed.
On January 31, a student, Wamiq Farooq got killed when a police officer fired a tear smoke shell at his head at Bohri Kadal. The killing created a stir across Kashmir. Massive demonstrations were held for five consecutive days. The clashes left around 300 persons including 150 police men injured.
Three militants including a commander of Harkat-e-Jehad-e-Islami was killed in an encounter with the troops at Poonch on February 4. The encounter also consumed a soldier.
On February 5, a BSF party led by RK Birdi commandant shot dead a student of eleventh standard, Zahid Farooq near Brain, Nishat. The killing triggered violent clashes causing injuries to more than 200 persons. The injured included more than 50 police and CRPF personnel. A CID man, Muhammad Yusuf was gunned down by militants at Sopore on February 9.
Two Hizb militants including Muzaffar Khan died in a fierce encounter with the troops at Dooru on February 11. Two militants owing allegiance to Hizbul Mujahideen died in a gun battle with the troops at Rajouri Kandi on February 12. On February 15, a Lashker militant was killed at Kalakote, Rajouri. Same day another Lashker militant was gunned down by the troops at Kulgam.
On February 18 two militants of Jaish were killed in an encounter with the troops at Shankerpora, Pulwama. A police man sustained injuries in the encounter.
Chinkipora, Sopore encounter left four troopers including a captain and two militants dead on February 23. Sixteen houses were destroyed during the encounter.
A district commander of Hizbul Mujahdeen was killed in a gun fight withy the troops at Dooru. The slain militant was identified as Shaheen Parvez. Same day a police informer was shot dead by militants at Bemina.
A captain and four militants died in an exchange of fire at Tral on March 3. Four army men sustained injuries in the encounter.
A CRPF man died in a grenade attack in down town Srinagar on March 14. On March 16, a civilian Khurshid Ahmad Parray was shot dead by CRPF men after gunmen opened fire on them at Koker Bazar Lal Chowk.
The army claimed killing of eight militants after foiling an unsuccessful infiltration bid in Kupwara sector.
Two Lashker militants got killed in a gun battle with the troops at Kalakote, Rajouri on March 27. Two day gun fight at Kalakote Rajouri left five militants and four army men dead on March 30.
Two militants died in an encounter with the troops in Keran sector on April 4. Same day a militant was killed in an attack on a Congress worker at Pulwama.
A soldier died in an encounter with the militants at Zachaldara, Kupwara on April 7. An infiltrator was killed in Samba sector on April 12. A seventy year old beggar was killed by the troops in a fake encounter at Lolab on April 14.
A constable, Basher Ahmad was shot dead by militants at Dooru on April 21. Same day a cable operator was shot dead by militants at Sopore.
A militant owing allegiance to Hizbul Mujahideen was killed at Kellar, Pulwama on April 16. Soldiers killed a civilian Ghulam Muhammad at Kellar on April 24.
A civilian was killed in a stone pelting incident at Batmaloo on April 30. Same day three militants were killed in Machil sector.
A Major was killed in a militant attack at Bandipora on May 4. Two soldiers were killed while fighting infiltrators in Poonch sector on May 18.
The president of traders federation Sopore was killed at Sopore by unidentified gunmen. The killing evoked widespread condemnation.
Four militants were killed in an encounter in Rafiabad forests on May 31.
