GHSS Thial exposes sans basic facilities | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 2: Notwithstanding tall claims of the state government to provide better education in every nook and corner of the state, the situation on ground shows that government is lacking in its much talked objectives. Government schools in many parts of the state are in poor condition, particularly in rural and far-flung areas. The Government Higher Secondary School Thial having strength of almost 450, Tehsil Majalta in Udhampur district is one such example; this school was upgraded in 2007. This school caters to the educational needs of hundreds of people of five Panchayats including Dama, Panash, Khoon, Saeil, and Khyal. The students complained that despite upgraded in 2007, the school has shortage of staff. The staff comprised 8 masters, out of which two were not punctual in their duties. The school has only Arts stream that too without proper lecturers. Students preferring anonymity stated that despite repeated appeals, authorities concerned did not provide Science and Commerce stream with proper lecturers. They also informed that the posts of the principal, physical education teacher and librarian were also lying vacant. About the infrastructure, the students stated that the school has only 8 rooms including office, library, laboratory, students of the many classes were forced to sit in 8 rooms because of shortage of class rooms. There were also no proper playground and sports facilities in the school. One of the prominent citizens of the area, Jagan Nath stated "our area is already lagging behind in education, how our children can compete with the rest of world with this type of given facilities". He further said that the children of officers in different government departments and of politicians of all hues are study in high profile private schools; this is main reason for the sorry state of affairs in majority of the government schools. When contacted, Director Education Zahida Khan said, "She has sent the proposal to the state government for sanctioning more posts in the school. And as far as deficiency of the staff at present was concerned, we have sent teachers to the school." She further said that the post of the principal would be filled up shortly.
