New tools to fight stone pelting! | A new gun will throw chilli powder on protesters | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 2: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) intend to introduce a new type of gun to control stone pelting youth and to cut down killings during protests. The new weapon, it is believed, will give a burning sensation to the protesters. According to informed sources, the top brass of the CRPF was worried over the number of killings caused due to police and CRPF response to violent protests in Kashmir. "The killings only add fuel to the already explosive situation", a senior officer has said. A strategy, sources said, is being chalked out which focuses on a `gentle' response to violent clashes. The CRPF, sources said, is seriously thinking of procuring a new gun that will give a burning sensation to the protester. The burning sensation, sources believe, would force the protesters to disperse. Another gun which the sources said would use red chillies instead of a copper or rubber bullet is also being considered for introduction in Kashmir. The chilli gun commonly known as Paper Gun is available in India. There is no need to import it from outside. It throws chilli powder on the protesters. Sources quoting a CRPF official said the protesters had become accustomed to tear smoke shells. The protesters throw the shells back on the police. They also resort to heavy stone pelting. The number of broken shields in front of CRPF bunkers in the city of Srinagar stands witness to it. Surprisingly the Poly Carbonate sheet shields used by the SRPF and the police have not been found effective against stone pelting. There are another reasons for change of this intended change of strategy, sources said. The killings not only act as a catalyst to violence but also bring a bad name to the country at the international level. Following massive protests in the month of February, the police also were thinking of introducing a new gun. In fact, a few guns were purchased by the police. The gun deactivates a protester for ten minutes or so to facilitate and ensure his protest. However, the plan, it seems, has been shelved. Pertinent to mention around five hundred persons have sustained injuries in stone pelting incidents since January. The injured include around 150 police and CRPF personnel.
