Kashmir may prove Azad's Waterloo | Workers see better choice in Soz | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 2: With J&K PCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz gaining popularity in the Congress party, Kashmir may prove former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad's Waterloo. The workers not only see a better choice in Soz but also accuse Azad of taking the state to the verge of disintegration during the Amarnath land row of 2008. Azad is being accused of creating indiscipline in the party by encouraging and promoting `unscrupulous' elements. It was Azad who resorted to cheap methods two months ago and organized a road show in the Press Enclave of the summer capital. A handful of Azad's supporters raised slogans against the Congress chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz. Azad, sources in the party say received a sound scolding from the central leadership for his `misadventures'. Azad almost surrendered and issued a statement saying he had nothing to do with the state politics. But he returned only a week later and addressed a rally in South Kashmir. The Congress workers believe that the rally was facilitated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a purpose. Even as Azad tried to project himself as hero claiming credit for all development during his tenure, the self propagated image hardly goes well with what actually people feel about him, not to speak of the workers and leaders at different levels in his own party, who are utterly disappointed and feel disgusted. Congress workers believe that Azad desperately failed as Chief Minister of the state. "His handling of the Amarnath land row created a wedge between two regions of the state. The people gave their verdict during the 2008 assembly elections. Congress lost many a seat to BJP and other political parties", they accuse. There is no denying the fact that Azad too has a lobby in the party but most of the workers see a better choice in Soz. "He is dynamic and rarely sits in his office. He has been touring the Valley for the past few months. His tours have yielded good results", Iqbal Ahmad, a youth Congress activist told Early Times. According to Iqbal, Sonia Gandhi is expected to address the problem during her forthcoming visit to Kashmir. "We expect her to direct Azad to keep his hands off Jammu Kashmir. He holds an important portfolio in the union government. Let him serve the people in rest of India", he said. The defiant workers seem determined to end Azad's Jammu Kashmir mission the moment Sonia lands in the Valley. Kashmir may prove his Waterloo. Whatever manipulations and maneuverings Azad has been indulging in only to have upper hand in J&K political affairs have boomeranged not only for the people of the state but proved disaster for unity within the party. In the given scenario, how he plays his cards remains to be seen.
