550 bedded SMGS hospital caters 800 patients | Shortage of staff, overload on labour room makes scene messy | | SANDEEP BHAT EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 3: The man who signed the treaty of accession, Maharaja Hari Singh, laid the foundation of a hospital in Jammu and Kashmir in 1940. But instead of naming it after him, he christened it on his great-grandfather's name, as Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital. That makes this hospital one of the oldest ones, but it also has the dubious distinction of being one of the most overcrowded in the state. One of the oldest hospitals of the state, Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh hospital (SMGS) is seen today as one of the most overcrowded hospital .On an average nearly 300 patients attend the outpatient department (OPD) daily, mostly the cases of Gynae, and pediatrics. The main rush of patients is from far flung areas of the region. One patient is accompanied by 3 to 4 attendants which also makes hospital over crowded. Dy. Medical superintendent of hospital Dr. Dara Singh while talking to correspondent admitted there is a shortage of staff in the Hospital due to which work suffers. He said main thrust is on Labour room as daily 80 to 100 pregnant ladies get registered. As there are less number of incubators 5 to 6 newly born babies are kept in one incubator, something which is not permitted under norms. In addition to this, shortage of sanitation staff meant for the labour room also makes scenario messy in the hospital administration. "In order to reduce rush of unwanted crowd we introduced Rs. 5 as entry ticket for the attendants but this didn't yield any result….. We are looking for other measures to stop the influx of more and more people in the Hospital as it creates unnecessary hassles in smooth functioning", Dr Singh said. He further said that SMGS is already converted exclusively as mother and child care hospital. Main thrust on this hospital is from the places like Rajouri, Poonch, Sunderbani, Kathua, Samba, Billawar, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Ramban, Doda, Banihal, Udhampur, Reasi and other far flung areas of the province. The influx of patients is also from the local population and from outskirts of the city. During winter season when the Durbar Moves from summer capital to winter capital (Jammu) the rush in the hospital increases as it has to cater the Kashmir population also. Besides the Kashmiri Migrants which constitute the sizeable population in around the city also avail facilities in the hospital. The migrant labourers from Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and other states also avail facilities form this territory hospital. The Deputy Superintendent maintained that the hospital administration is providing all possible help to the patients and their attendants but due to ever increasing rush not compatible to the existing space and staff , the Hospital authorities are unable to provide hundred percent relief. The Health minister also assured that in the month of July, the newly constructed 200 bedded children's block will be inaugurated and the hospital will get much awaited succour. Most of the sanitation staff has been out sourced but still we face shortage of sanitary staff and hope in the coming months the problem will get solved. Minister for Medical Education RS Chib's phone was out of reach when contacted by this correspondent.
