Mehbooba requests special session of LA | Shun divisive politics: CM responds | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 4: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah to convene a special session of the legislative assembly to ensure repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, the PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti has suggested passing of a resolution on the floor of the house for repeal of AFSPA. The strong worded letter while making a mention of three slain Nadihal youth reads: "The youth are being purchased with the intention of slaughtering them near the LoC for rewards as the government functionaries live luxurious lives in their castles." Mehbooba has taken the government for task for ordering a magisterial probe in proven cases of murder. "Most probably you (Chief Minister) is confused as to what law to invoke in such cases. Even a kid knows what law is applicable to a case of murder", she said. The leader of opposition while quoting Chief Minister's recent remark that the `blood of Kashmiris had become cheap' accused Omar of making it (blood) cheaper. "Unfortunately AFSPA has become a tool of repression in Jammu Kashmir. As elected representatives of the people, it is our duty to see to it that the draconian law is repealed", she said. Mehbooba said the people had great expectations with the elected representatives. "You have fixed a time frame for repeal of AFSPA (2014). Does it mean that nobody can be taken to task for murder, enforced disappearances, custodial killings till 2014", she questioned. While stressing need for convening a special session of the legislative assembly for repeal of AFSPA, Mehbooba said: "If we pass a resolution on the floor of the house seeking repeal of the draconian law, the whole country will support us", she said. Mehbooba assured her party's support for repeal of AFSPA. The Chief Minister has rejected Mehbooba's request for a special session. "I have studied your request for a special session of the Legislature to be called and find no merit in the same. In the best tradition of the democracy, the state in the last sixteen months has had three sessions of the state Legislature and the last one was one of the longest in the history of the state thereby providing ample opportunity to all the legislators to raise, debate, discuss and resolve various issues and many more such meaningful sessions will be held in future as well." Omar while appreciating Mehbooba's offer of cooperation said: "I value your offer of cooperation but it would carry more value if your party were to shun the divisive political ideology and work towards strengthening the cohesive fabric of the state." Pertinent to mention the Chief Minister assured repeal of AFSPA immediately after assuming office last year. But, the promise could not be fulfilled as New Delhi refused to repeal the law. Omar Abdullah informed the gullible people through his Law Minister, Ali Muhammad Sagar about the `necessity of having AFSPA'. A National Conference legislator made a sarcastic remark in the assembly. He said: "If AFSPA is repealed, how can we move about."
