SBAS demands ban on Doniger's book

JAMMU, June 4: Well-known historian Wendy Doniger's 2009 book, 'Hindus: An Alternative History', has kicked up a storm with the Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti (SBAS)-an outfit of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)-protesting the book's publication in the country and demanded a complete ban on it.
Talking media persons here in Jammu, Atul Kothari, co-convenor Shiksha Bachao Andolan Samiti reiterated his demand saying, "Wendy Doniger's book contains numerous factual errors, mis-characterizations, and shows an undercurrent of deep contempt for Hindus."
"We condemn this book for its gross factual errors and gratuitously hurtful and contemptuous depictions e.g. comparing revered Hindu goddesses to Playboy models, mocking Hindus as unfaithful 'serial monogamists'. This book caricatures Hinduism in a grossly offensive and degrading manner," said Kothari.
He added, 'By giving a pornographic twist to Hindu objects of veneration and worship, Doniger is trying to create defame the Hinduism which we will not tolerate thus Shiksha Bachao Andolan demanded worldwide banning and scrapping of this book'.
He informed, "Recently we held massive protest outside US Embassy in New Delhi against the Book and the decision of National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) to consider honouring Dr Wendy Doniger for her book."
He claimed that after strong protest National Book Critics Circle had cancelled the award ceremony.
He said that the meeting decided to conduct massive demonstrations in all the states and metro cities against the insult of the Hindus in the book.
Envisaging a new education structure in India by bringing an alternate change, Kothari said, "We want to bring an alternate change in education structure art of learning and thus to conduct workshops and seminars in various parts of the country on the syllabus prepared by Shiksha Bachao Andolan for character building and personality development, moral and ethic values.He said that Shiksha Bachao Andolan has appealed to all the Universities of India to use India Dress code during there convocation ceremonies.He further appealed to the people to send memorandums to the Vice Chancellors of various universities to conduct the convocation ceremonies only in Indian dress.
Ranjeet Sharma, coordinator J&K Chapter of Shiksha Bachao Andolan was also present on the occasion.
