People pray for end to gory saga | | | Even those who are seen shouting in favour of Azadi or those who raise anti-India slogans do not seem to be averse to the restoration of peace and normalcy to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.Yes,they want peace because they feel tired of the 20-year long turmoil and turbulence. There are many who wish to rest and recreate on the lush green lawns of the Mughal gardens,or on the verdent slopes in Gulmarg and beside the roaring waterfall at Aharbal in Shopian. There are many who wish to enjoy shikara ride in the Dal and Nigin lakes. There is no restriction on such activities imposed either by the Government or by the militants but one is not sure when the grenade will explode. One is not certain when and where an IED will go off or there is exchange of gun fire between the security forces and the militants. But those who are keen to enjoy the beauties of nature in Kashmir are not sure of the mood and plans of those who thrive on violence and uncertainty. For the separatists and their supporters, for leaders of militant outfits peace in Kashmir can mean a swan song for them.Once peace descends on the mountain slopes,on the orchards,on the agricultural fields,on the shopping centres and on residential colonies the separatists and the militants may be forced to shut their shops.Well those who claim that peace has started returning to Kashmir are mistaken. This is evident from the number of militancy related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir during the last five months.During these months about 170 people lost their lives and this included 33 security personnel 108 militants and 29 civilians. There were more than 70 incidents of violence in the state during these months. As far as the number of infiltration bids during the last five months were concerned the level was higher than recorded during the corresponding period last year.Even if there is slight improvement in the security scenario following the elimination of a large number of militants dring the last over one year common people are yet to shed their scare. It is this fear perception that forces them to support militants and their activities. It is this scare that prevents people from proesting against those militants who are found in indulging in human rights violations. As confusion grips the state separatists and other political players keep on issuing sermons. Some suggest meaningful dialogue between Delhi and Islamabad on Kashmir.Others favour triangular parleys on the plea that any solution to the Kashmir issue can be durable if it has aproval of the representatives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. And Delli usually does not disappoint those who favour either the bilateral talks or the triangular parleys.Talks are intiated. They are suspended. They are resumed. This has been the story of the last seven years. And as peace continues to elude people of the state Pakistani troops, deployed on the International Border and on the LOC,keep on disturbing the eerie silence on the border with sporadic incidents of firing. At times they provide fire cover to the militants wishing to sneak into the Indian territory and on other occasions they target the Indian posts without bothering about the consequences. These sporadic incidents of border firing pose threat to the seven year long ceasefire on the LOC.And the border villagers are gripped by panic because they had to undergo severe ordeals when their villages used to bear the brunt of the gun and mortar fire from the Pakistani gunners. In the context of these developments one wishes to know when people in Jammu and Kashmir will be allowed to breathe as much freely as they used to prior to the rise of militancy in 1988-89.Much "blood" has flowed down the rivers in jammu and Kashmir and one prays for an end to this gory saga.
