Dr Farooq Abdullah is not appearing that tough and strong on separatists these days. Addressing Prize distribution function of the "Keep Jammu Clean Programme" launched jointly by the Jammu Municipality and Jammu and Kashmir Bank at Press Club on 5 Oct 1999 Dr Farooq Abdullah said after Nehru it was only Mr. Vajpayee who is sincere in solving problems confronting the country asserting that Hurriyat leaders would not be allowed to exploit the religious sentiments of the people and declared that Hurriyat leaders would be sent to the Jodhpur jail adding ,"They can kill me but they can’t take Kashmir. If one Farooq goes another Farooq will come to protect the Mother Land. I will break their back-bone to protect the integrity of the nation". Why so much of change in 2010 ?. Surely he has compulsions.
And to add to the agony of the people of the Kashmir Valley in particular { JK in general } the anti India bells are allowed to ring loud and clear in Kashmir valley. People like Omar Farooq, Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani, Sajjad Lone who have made their anti India { to be specific anti 1947 accession} view point crystal clear are allowed to further cultivate their views freely.
The political grounds in Kashmir valley as on date are too rough for leaders like Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. Under the circumstances it has become difficult for Omar Abdulla to stand to the ideological pressures of separatist and anti India elements. National Conference has no much political dangers from Congress in Kashmir valley. But NC has to fight against the separatist elements and separatist ideologies. The way New Delhi has been giving recognition to separatist and some “so called” vocal main stream elements ,even some terrorist leaders, surely made the job of leaders like Farooq Abdullah difficult . New Delhi { Congress / UPA 1} shared power in JK with PDP for six years. Many actions of PDP went against the interests and credibility of India..
The NC, Congress and PDP leaders claim that the separatists and groups like Hurriyat do not enjoy any common support ..But still these separatist anti 1947 accession elements throw challenges on New Delhi. Even Prime Minister of India has extended invitation to the so called separatist leaders for talks. But they have been so bluntly rejecting the invitation { they refuse to even sit in a meeting with PM where those who believe Kashmir is India are also invited}.The separatist ideology is so clearly and comfortably allowed to float in Kashmir Valley. The common man has started feeling with conviction { may be faint} that surely there is some wrong at the part of India. Particularly after 1889 the local Kashmiri has discussed and heard very less about the truthfulness of the October 1947 accession of JK with India. Rather they have heard / read more of statements on alleged injustice to Kashmiries done after 1947, more of conditional 1947 accession, more of some special agreements made by Nehru / Indira with Sheikh Mohd Abdullah with Kashmiries. The security forces are humiliated every next moment.
The political electoral successes do depend upon the local sentiments and thinking. In Kashmir region the “Kashmiriat” has made deep roots and any one who pleads for specials for Kashmiries can make better gains. Even Congress party too has over the years { if not particularly supported the slogans of Kashmiriat } has not condemned or questioned those who advocated that people of Kashmir valley have special claims over the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Where as in Jammu region nothing like Kashmiriat has been cultivated. Ofcourse Ghulam nabi Azad talked of Dogriat when he was Chief Minister of JK { 2006 to 2009.} Some isolated groups did talk of Jammu State . Some talk of Duggar Desh.. But no one could carry the concept that deep. So in Jammu issues like nationality/ development/ education / mattered more for political parties. So votes in Jammu region could be secured under different concepts.
National Conference is a political party and has to watch its political existence as well. National conference has to hence cultivate more of Kashmir valley. Unless leaders like Omar Abdullah { Farooq Abdullah} are extended support from New Delhi { rising above political interests} the conditions in JK shall not improve infavour of India. New Delhi and Jammu Region would be worst sufferers. In addition the claims of India over JK would weaken in the eyes of world community.
The Guinness World Records { a reference book published annually from UK, containing internationally recognized collection of world records } has named Kashmir as the 'world's largest militarized territorial dispute. On page 137 of the latest edition { chapter "Wars" under the heading "Largest militarized territorial dispute } it is written: "According to the CIA fact book, the dispute between China, India and Pakistan for Kashmir region is the largest and most militarized dispute. India also refuses to accept Pakistan's ceding of Kashmir lands to China in 1964 and recently claimed that China transferred nuclear weapons to Pakistan." It is not over here itself, the other record that Jammu and Kashmir has set is that a majority of non muslim local residents of Kashmir Valley are not able to go back to their homes even when Mufti Mohd Sayeed { promoter of JK PDP, the ex Home Minister of India , the Ex. Chief minister of JK } contests that there is no need of security forces / para military forces in JK. The Kashmiri Pundits, one of the most literate communities of India, are in exile for 20 years. Where as , on the other hand ,over 5 lakh Indian people comfortably and freely rush to Kashmir Valley for enjoyment and merry making during hot summers. Even thousands of non Kashmiri Indians and foreigners tour Kashmir Valley during winters. The government every next day extends welcome invitations to the outsiders for enjoying in Kashmir valley. But no such invitation is extended to even Kashmiri Pundit Government employees who are instead paid wages in exile . There are many suggesting and demanding unconditional talks with Kashmiri separatists { who do not accept 1947 accession of JK with India } even from with in Jammu and Kashmir ; and it is not taken that seriously by Delhi as should be done for any anti national act. So it is not that surprising for me to find some from the world community drawing opinions about the status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Majority of the youth in thirties { in Kashmir valley } has not received workable information about the truthfulness of New Delhi / local JK Governments of the past { not even through the media write-ups as may appear there locally }.National Conference has gone more under the pressures of separatists after Mufti Mohd Sayeed too started talking of Kashmiriat in his own style. “Mufties” have often been quoted as seeing solution to Kashmir turmoil resting in solving Kashmir dispute with Pakistan with involvement of “Kashmiries”. . PDP did talk of solution with in Indian constitution .But the way PDP addressed the issues does add some strength also to the propaganda done by separatists .The use of Indian and Pakistani currencies in POK and Kashmir was the suggestion from PDP that did not send mend the misconceptions about India, rather raised more doubts in the mind of innocent people of JK. Common people do not much understand technicalities { they just get carried by sentiments and local affinities}.
Youth leaders like Omar Abdullah can afford to take risk of losing power. More opportunities would come. But he has also to be backed up to fight the anti national elements. The other leaders from JK { particularly from Jammu and Ladakh regions should also put their weight behind the leadership of National Conference as far as the issues of oneness with India and fight against separatist ideologies is concerned..This would enable National Conference { the largest pro 1947 accession party of JK } to route out the anti India, separatist and militant organizations. After the grounds are cleared of separatist tentacles then all can fight democratic political battles with National Conference. No doubt it is a hard reality that Farooq Abdullah is the tallest pro India / pro accession leader that JK has this day. So there is no harm in supporting him for the cause. His recent soft statements regarding the Hurriyat / separatist/ Pakistan have surely been made under political compulsions since the separatist ideologies had been allowed to flourish and challenge the status of National Conference in JK { Valley in Particular}.Separatist view points have started emerging in Jammu region also under Kashmiri influence.
Some pro India groups in Jammu region too are getting frustrated . The recent press statement { 26 May 10} of Jammu State Morcha [P} conveying that “. If this subjugation at the hands of Kashmiri Leadership are the fruits of being Nationalist & for those who keep the Indian Flag flying; then the Govt. of India only will be responsible to force the Jammu people to seek Independence too “This should not be taken lightly. New Delhi must come out of slumber before it is too late. Need to save even the nationalist ideologues from frustration.
