NSUI demands compensation for families of two college girls
6/6/2010 11:03:26 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 6: A day after the death of two college girls in a tragic road mishap near Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) today demanded disbanding of traffic police department.
"The department has become a den of corruption and traffic cops have been deployed on roads just to collect money from transporters," Bhim Singh alleged.
He maintained, "Transport Ministry, department and traffic police have failed to streamline traffic and regulate speed of the vehicles particularly buses and mini-buses.0 Traffic Police department has installed uneven entry point in entire Jammu city just to mint money instead of maintaining traffic system resulting in frequent accident in Jammu."
"The drivers have to pay at various entry points at a rate of Rs 150-Rs 200 per nakas to ply our vehicle in the city on our routes," he alleged.
The JKNPP chief charged, "The traffic cops are emerging on the roads at any point and at any time is a common feature that, instead of streamlining the procedure has left the system hotchpotch on the roads resulting into chaos and the accidents that happened yesterday."
He demanded that the traffic management should be handover to a civil organization or Army to control the road mishaps. He also extended his condolences with the victims of yesterday's accident.
Meanwhile, National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has also expressed grief over the death of two students.
In a press statement issued here, Abhishek Koushal, state secretary appealed the police authorities to maintain some safety measures on the road from Satwari to Jewel where university, colleges and schools are situated to avoid such incidents in near future and initiate strict action against driver as well as the traffic police personnel on duty.
He also demanded a relief of Rs one lakh each to the families of the deceased from the government.
