EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 6: What does the open letter says in the end? It says, "Manmohan Ji you are gentleman, we normally expect you not to protect criminals in the name of patriotism. A Major or Subedar might be handed over to police; it is not enough to stem the rot. Tens of thousands have been killed here and many thousands are missing, people are anguished and seek justice. Appointment of an Independent Commission to inquire about what and where went wrong, is need of the hour. While a serious effort is made to unravel truth, you as person Dr. Manmohan Singh can make fresh beginning with people of Kashmir. It is to say sorry for what Kashmir has had to undergo all these years of violence and counter-violence. More than retributive justice and upholding the law, the challenge is to rise above the narrow political considerations. It is to differentiate between right and wrong, and to demonstrate kind of values you and we uphold. Is it too much of asking, we hope not."
It is hardly necessary to reflect on what the open letter said regarding the "violations of human rights", role of the Army and paramilitary forces, attitude of the Indian Prime Ministers towards Kashmir, "custodial killings", "disappearances", "fake encounters", application of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and so on. For, everyone is aware of the fact that the Kashmiri separatists and their supporters, especially the so-called human rights activists or the so-called peace activists have been saying so since long.
As expected, the open letter nowhere talked about the Pakistan-sponsored terrorism that has been convulsing and blooding the Kashmir's socio-political scene, particularly since 1987, at regular intervals. It did not talk about the process of religious cleansing that resulted into the wholesale migration of the miniscule minority of Kashmiri Pandits from their homes and hearts in January 1990. It did not talk about their tragedy. Nor did it bemoan the fact that the original inhabitants of Kashmir have become refugees in their own motherland. The open letter did not talk about the brutal attacks on the Army and its convoys and its camps; attacks on the CRPF personnel; attacks on the police and the police posts; attacks on and brutal murder of innocent civilians; and attacks on and desecration of the symbols of the Hindu civilization, including temples like Shri Raghunath Temple. The open letter did not condemn the concerted moves on the part of certain regressive and intolerant forces to change the name from Shri Shankra Charya Parbat to Takht-e-Sulaiman and from Hari Parbat to Koh-e-Marana (Hill of evil). It did not acknowledge the fact that the people in Kashmir have been dying because of what has been happening in Kashmir since 1990. In other words, the open letter did not utter a single word against those who have been instigating the innocent and emotional Kashmiri Muslims to come on the roads; confront and attack the Army, the CRPF and the Police; take the law of the land into their hands; subvert the state polity and raise anti-India and pro-Pakistan and pro-freedom slogans.
The open letter nowhere condemns the cult of gun that has engulfed the entire Kashmir Valley. Nor did the open letter talk about the fact that the Kashmiri separatist leaders have been living and thriving on the blood of innocent Muslims and that those who were paupers only until the other day have suddenly become multi millionaire. The open letter also did not talk about the tragedy of five million population of Jammu province, which have been suffering because of the Kashmiri domination over them. The open letter did not talk about the fact that Kashmir is the spoiled, appeased and pampered child of India and that it is this that has created a serious problem in the Valley, with the common Kashmiri Muslims being the victims of the negative, sectarian and separatist politics that is being indulged in by their irresponsible leadership. Nor did the open letter acknowledge even once that most of the Kashmir-based separatists, who have been operating as the Pakistani operatives in the Valley, are no less than serial killers.
The open letter, in a nutshell, did not acknowledge the fact that the Kashmiri separatists, in collaboration with Pakistan, have converted the Valley into a war zone and that in war zones certain things do happen. The open letter should have compared the situation in Jammu and Ladakh with Kashmir or it should have made a comparative study of the attitudes of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. That the writer of this open letter did not do so and that he adopted a lop-sided and biased approach should make one conclude that he is no different from other separatists, who only represent vested interests. And, still the writer of open letter wants the Prime Minister to make a new beginning in Kashmir. (To be continued)
