No traffic rules for minibus operators on city roads | | | Sandeep Bhat Early Times Report JAMMU, June 6: Even as traffic police cops are omnipresent on the city roads, minibus operators indulge in the worst kind of violation of the traffic norms with impunity from law. And, instead of booking them under law, the traffic cops are often seen exchanging pleasantries with them. They have miserably failed to devise any strategy to ensure smooth traffic on roads despite the fact that the number of vehicles continued to swell with the passage of every day. Official sources put the number of vehicles in the winter capital at over 5.50 lakh. Hardly a day passes when two to three accidents do not occur on the city roads. Yesterday's minibus accident at Gandhinagar, which claimed the lives of Rajni (20) and Avnish Choudhary (20), both students of Gandhinagar Women College, was the result of rash driving. Had traffic police been strict against those indulging in rash and reckless driving, the tragedy could have been avoided. Most of the minibus drivers are often seen indulging in overspeeding and overtaking in such a way as if there is no legal authority to punish them. They stop anywhere to pick up, or drop commuters. At times, they canbe seen dropping commuters in the middle of the road. The minibuses plying mostly on Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Talab Tillo, Janipur, Bakshi Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Satwari, Bahu Fort, Subash Nagar, Rehari, Amphalla, Muthi and Purkhoo routes were indulging in rash driving. The traffic police were not taking any action against these traffic violators because of their certain "vested" interests. On the contrary, no one dares to indulge in traffic violation in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Chandigarh due to the fear of cops. The J&K traffic police too need to do something to improve their image. The traffic police SP Zahid Manhas was not available for comments.
